VOLLEYBALL

Calvin used home court advantage to its advantage this weekend, capturing the title of its own Midwest Invitational for the first time since the 2002 season and for just the third time in the last 10 years.

Calvin (25-8) completed an unblemished 4-0 tournament record on Saturday with four-game victories over nationally-ranked Ohio Northern and conference rival Hope.

After defeating Olivet and Anderson in first round pool play on Friday, Calvin opened competition in the championship pool Saturday morning with a match against the ninth-ranked Polar Bears of Ohio Northern. After dropping the opening game 30-28, Calvin roared back to win the next three games by scores of 30-26, 30-28, 30-13. Calvin trailed 25-24 in the pivotal game three before rallying to win six of the final nine points.

Senior Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) was huge for the Knights, recording 26 kills, 22 digs, four blocks and an attack percentage of .581. Junior Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA) added 18 kills, seven digs and four blocks while senior Katie Schultz (Escondido, CA) had 15 kills and a team-high 28 digs. Sophomore Molly Krikke (Greenwich, OH) was also strong in the middle, collecting 11 kills and five blocks. Sophomore setter Katie Zondervan (Lakewood, CA) had 15 digs and a match-high 75 assists. Freshman libero Lauren DeGroot (Tulare, CA) was also strong in the back row with 28 digs. As a team, Calvin collected an attack percentage of .314.

The Calvin victory was its second of the year over Ohio Northern. It also snapped a 14-match win streak by Ohio Northern.

Calvin then came up with a 30-15, 30-22, 28-31, 30-28 victory over Hope to finish as the only 4-0 team in the tournament. After rolling early, Calvin was forced to battle against a Hope team that dug in its heels.

Vogel was the go-to player on offense in the win over the Flying Dutch, amassing 22 kills and an attack percentage of .409. Hendricks had a great all-around effort with 15 digs, 12 kills and four service aces.

Schultz also tallied 15 digs and 12 kills and picked up three blocks. Zondervan had 49 assists and 15 digs while DeGroot picked up 23 digs.

Hendricks and DeGroot were both named to the all-tournament team with Hendricks receiving tournament MVP honors.

Calvin will now prepare to host Tri-State University Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. in a first round MIAA Tournament match at the Calvin Fieldhouse.
