Men's Golf Fifth in Final MIAA Standings * Ten Brink Sets School Record
Women's Golf Third at Fall Invitational * Huizenga Repeats as Medalist

MEN'S GOLF

Calvin used homecourse advantage to move up a spot in the final MIAA standings as the Knights fired a team score of 321 strokes Monday afternoon at the eighth and final MIAA outing of the year.

Calvin hosted the outing at the Watermark Country Club. The score by the Knights was good for fifth place on Monday and allowed Calvin to move past Adrian and into fifth place in the final league standings.

Calvin entered Monday's outing two strokes behind fifth place Adrian and four strokes behind fourth place Alma. Alma took fourth on Monday with a score of 318 strokes to finish seven strokes ahead of Calvin in the final league standings while Adrian had a 328 to slip to sixth place.

Two-time defending champion Hope made it three in-a-row as the Flying Dutchmen clinched the league crown with a second place score of 304 to finish 22 strokes ahead of league runner-up Tri-State. Olivet took first at Monday's outing with a course record score of 301 and took third in the final overall standings.

Highlighting the afternoon for the Calvin men was junior Jeff Ten Brink of Kalamazoo Christian High School who fired a score of 78 that was good for 11th place individually. More importantly it allowed Ten Brink to finish seventh in the final MIAA individual standings with a Calvin single-season record (MIAA) scoring average of 75.6 strokes-per-round, breaking the previous record of 76.0 strokes-per-round set by Phil Rietema in 2003.

In taking seventh place in the final league standings, Ten Brink landed a spot on the All-MIAA second team.

Joe Kiss of Olivet was Monday's medalist with a course record score of 71. Joe Bickel of Tri-State was the season medalist, finishing with a final league average of 71.2 strokes-per-round.

Calvin's top finisher on Monday was freshman Brad Tindall of Vicksburg High School who fired a round of 77 that was good for a three-way tie for eighth place. Rounding out Calvin's finishers on Monday were senior Ryan Fischer (North Haledon, NJ) with an 80 and junior Tim VanVugt (Brookfield, WI) and freshman Drew Virkus (Kalamazoo Christian HS) with rounds of 86. Calvin senior Nick Bolt (New Berlin, WI) also closed out his senior year with a flourish, posting a score of 75 that did not count in Calvin's final team score as Bolt competed as an alternate.

In collecting a score of 77 Monday, Tindall finished the year with a scoring average of 78.4 that was 14th in the final MIAA individual standings. Tindall's average is the ninth-best MIAA single-season scoring average in Calvin men's golf history.

WOMEN'S GOLF

For the second straight year, Calvin senior Annie Huizenga captured medalist honors at the Calvin/Hope Fall Invitational at the Thornapple Pointe Golf Club. A graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School, Huizenga fired a score of 81 that was four strokes better than her nearest competitor.

As a team, Calvin was third in the three-team field with a score of 389. Hope won the invitational with a team score of 366 with Aquinas taking second with a team score of 373.

Calvin's second-best score came from senior Margaret Tassaro (Carnegie, PA) as she picked up a score of 99. Rounding out Calvin's finishers were junior Abby Stemler (Elk River, MN) with a 102, freshman Katelyn Farrell (Lakeview HS) with a 108 and freshman Juanita Gibson (Detroit Renassaince HS) with a 132. Senior Jodi Offringa (Unity Christian HS) also played individually for the Knights on Monday and came up with a score of 120.

Calvin will now prepare for the upcoming MIAA Tournament this Friday and Saturday at the Bedford Valley Country Club.
