ALL-MIAA BASEBALL HONORS ANNOUNCED * DETERS NAMED MIAA PITCHER OF THE YEAR
Calvin College senior Jim Deters has been named the MIAA Pitcher of the Year in baseball. A native of Portage and a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School, the 6-4 right-hander is receiving the honor for the first time in his career. This is the second year that the MIAA has presented a pitcher of the year award in baseball. As a freshman in 2002, Deters was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player when the pitcher of the year award was not yet in existence.
In addition, Deters has been named to the All-MIAA first for the third time in his career and is joined on the first team by current Calvin teammate and former high school teammate Mark Asma. A junior centerfield, Asma is also a native of Portage and a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School.
This past spring, Deters made a big impact in both the Calvin and MIAA record books. In league play this spring, he put together a pitching record of 6-0 with an earned run average of 1.24 along with 86 strikeouts in 59 innings of work as he led the league in all four categories. During the league season, he struck out 20 batters against both Kalamazoo and Olivet, setting new Calvin and MIAA single-game records for strikeouts. The strikeout total was the sixth-highest single-game total in NCAA III baseball history. His league total of 86 strikeouts was also a new MIAA single-season record.
A four-time MIAA Pitcher of the Week including a two-time MIAA Pitcher of the Week in 2005, Deters also hit the charts in the MIAA career books, finishing his league career as the all-time league leader in victories (18), strikeouts (210) and earned run average (1.77) while finishing fourth on the league charts in decisions (21) and third in innings pitched (167.1). Deters established his records despite missing the all but one game of the 2003 MIAA season as he suffered a season-ending injury in the second week of Calvin's MIAA campaign.
Deters is scheduled to graduate next Saturday from Calvin with a degree in criminal justice. He is then expected to be selected in the 2005 Major League baseball draft scheduled for June 7 and 8.
Asma is making his first appearance on the All-MIAA first team. The award is particularly sweet for the junior outfielder as he missed nearly the entire 2004 season with a leg injury. Asma regained his fleet form in the outfield this spring however to bat .351 in league play, ranking him 11th in the final MIAA batting race. Calvin's lead-off man at the plate, Asma compiled an on-base percentage of .474 in league play while scoring 23 runs and driving in 10 as he finished third in the MIAA in on-base percentage and runs scored. He also collected a league-best 15 walks, was tied for third in stolen bases (6), was fourth in base hits (27) and fifth in total bases (36).
Asma was also stellar in the field, compiling a .923 fielding percentage as he committed just three errors in 39 total chances while also recording four outfield assists.
Calvin also placed three players on the All-MIAA second team as sophomore outfielder Nick Caudle, junior utility man Mark Tigchelaar and junior catcher Mike Aggen were All-MIAA second team selections.
Caudle is from Grandville and is a graduate of Calvin Christian High School. In conference games, Caudle was 21 for 59 at the plate for a .356 average that ranked him eighth in the final MIAA batting race. Caudle also scored 14 runs and compiled a slugging percentage of .492 that ranked eighth among the MIAA leaders. His on-base percentage of .437 ranked him seventh in the final MIAA statistics.
Tigchelaar is from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School. During the year, he started in all 21 of Calvin's MIAA games and appeared at first base, second base, designated hitter and the outfield. Tigchelaar finished the conference season with a .293 batting average, scored 22 runs and drove in 17 as he finished sixth in the MIAA in runs batted in. Despite his several position shifts, Tigchelaar committed just one error in 45 fielding chances for a .978 fielding percentage.
Aggen is from Evergreen Park, Illinois. He is a graduate of Evergreen Park Community High School. Aggen batted .358 (29-for-81) in league play to finish seventh in the final MIAA batting race. He also finished second in the MIAA in base hits (29), fifth in runs batted in (19) and tied for sixth in total bases (35). Behind the plate, Aggen compiled a fielding percentage of .978 and threw out nine runners attempting to steal to finish tied for the league lead in that category.
Also receiving honorable mention recognition from the MIAA coaches were juniors Tyler VanEps (Denver, CO/Denver Christian HS) and Tim Stoeffler (St. Joseph/Ionia HS).
Under the direction of first-year head coach Jim Timmer, Calvin finished third in the final MIAA standings this spring with a 12-9 league mark, a six-game improvement over its 2004 campaign when it finished sixth in the MIAA standings with a 6-12 league record. In overall games, Calvin was 14-20 this year.
