CALVIN WEEKEND SPORTS WRAP-UP FOR APRIL 29-30
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams will head into the upcoming
MIAA Championships May 5 & 6 with a strong wave of momentum after a multitude
of standout performances at the Hillsdale Relays this past weekend.
The following is a list of notable performances from the Calvin women's team at
the Hillsdale Relays:
*Junior Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin HS) -- posted and NCAA III
automatic qualifying and career-best score of 4,570 points in the heptathlon
last Thursday and Friday which was good for a third place finish. An
All-American in the heptathlon in 2003, her previous career-best had been 4,478
points.
*Senior Laura Hamilton (Senior, Downers Grove, IL/Timothy Christian HS) -- Took
fourth in the 400 meter hurdles Friday night with a season-best and strong NCAA
III provisional qualifying time of 1:02.10 that was just two-tenths of a second
off an automatic qualifying time.
*Freshman Sarah Wittingen (East Grand Rapids/East Grand Rapids HS) -- Took
ninth in the 400 meter hurdles Friday night with a career-best and strong NCAA
III provisional qualifying time of 1:02.68. Her time was a career-best by
nearly two seconds. Wittingen later ran on Calvin's 400 meter relay team that
posted an NCAA III provisional qualifying and season-best time of 48.80.
*Sophomore Lydia Singer (Wilmington, DE/Hillcrest Academy) -- Took eighth in
the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a career-best and NCAA III provisional
qualifying time of 11:04.87. Her time was a career-best by nearly 17 seconds.
*Sophomore Kelly Zwier (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) -- Took 10th in the
long jump with a career-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying mark of 18-1
1/2.
*Sophomore Melissa Vanden Berg (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) --
Posted a career-best time of 38:26.58 in taking eighth place in the 10,000
meters. Her time was a career-best effort by more than a full minute.
*Sophomore Laura Holtrop (Derwood, MD/Chapelgate Christian Academy) Posted a
career-best time of 18:27.25 in taking 45th in the 5,000 meters Friday night.
Her time was a career-best effort by more than 50 seconds.
*Sophomore Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA/Unity Christian HS) -- Took sixth in
the triple jump with a school record mark of 36-10 1/4 that was a career-best
by more than a foot and was an inch away from an NCAA III provisional
qualifying mark. The previous school record had been 36-9 1/2 set by Mae
Baber-Kleinheksel in 2001.
*Senior Sue Abbring (Highland, IN/Illiana Christian HS) -- Took second in the
200 meters with a time of 24.84 and then took fifth in the 400 meters with a
season-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 56.82.
*Sophomore Katie VanderLaan (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) -- Took
12th in the 400 meters with a season and career-best time of 58.90 in the 400
meters.
*Junior Camille Medema (Grand Rapis/Grand Rapids Christian HS) -- Took 13th in
the 800 meters (2:18.94) and just missed a career-best time in the 1,500 meters
with a time of 4:47.75 that was good for 16th place.
*Junior Kim Vanderzee (Shoreline, WA/Shorewood HS) -- Took second in the high
jump with an NCAA III provisional qualifying mark of 5-7.
*Sophomore Katie Bolt (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) -- Took fourth
in the high jump with a season-best jump of 5-5.
*Junior Missy Smith (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) -- Took fourth in
the pole vault with an NCAA III automatic qualifying vault of 12-0 that was
just two inches off a personal-best.
*Sophomore Lisa Winkle (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) -- Jumped 17-5 1/2 in
the long jump and then joined Abbring, Wittingen and VanderLaan in the 400
meter relay that produced a season-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying
time of 48.80.
The following is a list of notable performances from the Calvin men's team at
the Hillsdale Relays:
*Junior Nate Meckes (Bay City/Westland Lutheran HS) -- Took first in the shot
put with an NCAA III automatic qualifying and school record throw of 58-7 1/2,
surpassing his previous record of 58-4 3/4. Also took first in the discus with
an NCAA III automatic qualifying and school record throw of 179-5 - surpassing
his previous school record of 177-11.
*Junior Justin Grasmeyer (Norwalk, CA/Valley Christian HS) -- Took seventh in
the discus with an NCAA III provisional qualifying and season-best mark of
162-8.
*Sophomore Tim Finnegan (Los Alamos, NM/Home Schooled) -- Took 12th in the
10,000 meters with an career-best and NCAA III automatic qualifying time of
30:06.94
*Fifth-year senior Kris Koster (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) -- Took
13th in the 10,000 meters with a career-best and NCAA III automatic qualifying
time of 30:09.21.
*Freshman Dan Mackay (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian HS) -- Took 30th
with a career-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 31:09.24.
*Junior Harrison Jorritsma (Beamsville, ON/Smithville Christian HS) -- Took
37th with a career-best time of 31:31.80 in the 10,000 meters.
*Sophomore Ben Hammer (Williamsburg/Elk Rapids HS) -- Took 40th in the 10,000
meters with a career-best time of 31:43.96.
IN THE 5,000 METERS, CALVIN HAD FOUR INDIVIDUALS POST SUB-15 MINUTE TIMES,
THOSE INDIVIDUALS ARE:
*Senior Aaron Iverson (Radnor, OH/Buckeye Valley HS) -- Took 49th with a
career-best time of 14:51.50.
*Junior Tyler Zwagerman (Holland/Holland Christian HS) -- Took 53rd with a
career-best time of 14:55.27.
*Senior Jeff Engbers (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian HS) -- Took 54th
with a career-best time of 14:55.31.
*Sophomore Bill Reynolds (Newtown Square, PA/Delaware County Christian HS) --
Took 58th with a career-best time of 14:57.44.
OTHER NOTABLES INCLUDED:
*Senior Joel Alberts (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) -- Took 22nd in
the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a career-best time of 9:39.84. The time was
a career-best by nearly 15 seconds.
*Sophomore Eric DeVries (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) -- Competing in his
first-ever decathlon, DeVries posted a solid two-day total of 5,404 points to
take fifth place.
*Freshman Joel Baker (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) -- Took 13th in the 200
meters with a time of 22.64 and 15th in the 400 meters with a time of 49.72.
Both times were career-best efforts.
NOTES FOR UPCOMING MIAA TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
The MIAA Track and Field Championships are scheduled to held Thursday and

The Calvin men's track and field team will be bidding to make MIAA history as
it will be after at least a share of its 12th straight MIAA title. The Knights
have won at least a share of 11 straight MIAA titles -- matching the longest
streak in MIAA men's track and field history. The streak of 11 straight title
was originally established by Michigan State University from 1897-to-1907.
The following members of the Calvin men's track and field team are defending
MIAA champions in their respective events:
*Justin Grasmeyer (Discus)
*Junior Tim Zwiers of Pella, IA (Triple Jump)
*Junior Brian VanDyken of Grand Rapids Christian HS (400 meters)
*Junior Chris Friebel of Fairborn, OH (200 meters)
The Calvin women's track and field team will also be bidding to make MIAA
history as the Knights have won at least a share of an unprecedented 16th
straight MIAA title. Calvin's current streak of 15 MIAA titles is the longest
active streak in MIAA women's athletics history. The streak began with MIAA
co-titles with Alma in 1989 and 1990. Since then, Calvin has won 13 straight
outright crowns.
The following members of the Calvin women's track and field team are defending
MIAA champions in their respective events:
*Senior Lisa Nanninga of Grand Rapids Christian HS (Shot Put)
*Christine Hendricks (javelin)
*Kim Vanderzee (high jump)
*Katie VanderLaan (400 meters)
*Laura Hamilton (100 meter hurdles and 400 meter hurdles). Hamilton is the
three-time defending champion in the 400 meter hurdles.
**In addition, Calvin's 400 meter relay team has won the league title the last
nine years while its 4x400 meter relay team has won the league title the last
13 years.
