CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 12, 2005

SOFTBALL

Calvin got back on the winning track and remained unbeaten in MIAA competition
with a 6-3, 11-2 doubleheader sweep over visiting St. Mary's Tuesday
afternoon at the Gainey Athletic Complex.

The sweep came on the heels of a disappointing weekend that saw the Knights
(14-8 overall, 4-0 MIAA) drop four straight non-conference games, losing twice
to the University of Chicago and once to North Central (IL) and Clarke College
(IA).

In game one of Tuesday's doubleheader with St. Mary's (5-16 overall, 0-8
MIAA), Calvin broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the fourth
with freshman Cori VanKoevering (Unity Christian HS) delivering the key blow
with a two-run RBI triple.

St. Mary's came back with a two runs in the fifth but the Knights answered
with a run in the bottom half as junior Jeanne Cole (Mason County Eastern HS)
led off with a double and scored on an infield single by senior Bridget
O'Malley (Fairfax, VA). Calvin added a pair of insurance runs in the
sixth as freshman Danielle Roskamp (Kalamazoo Christian HS) belted a two-out
double off the top of the centerfield wall and scored on a triple to right
field by Cole with Cole scoring on an overthrow by the right fielder. St.
Mary's went scoreless in the seventh as Calvin gained the victory.

Senior Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont HS) picked up the win, improving to 4-3 on
the year as she struck out one and walked two in five innings of work.
Freshman Ruth Anna Spooner (Twin Falls, ID) picked up the save in relief as she
was credited with two scoreless innings of work.

In game two, Calvin erupted for 11 runs and 14 hits as the Knights scored six
runs in the third, added single runs in the fourth and fifth and tacked on
three more in the top of the seventh. St. Mary's scored its two runs in the
bottom of the third.

Cole went 2-for-5 in game two with three RBI's including a run-scoring
double. Cole finished the afternoon 5-for-9 with four RBI's, two doubles and
a triple. O'Malley also went 3-for-3 with two RBI's and a pair of runs
scored in game two including her first triple of the year. Senior Abby
Konyndyk (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI's
and was 4-for-7 on the afternoon. Sophomore Andrea Wagner (Unity Christian HS)
also had two hits in game two and was 3-for-7 on the day. In addition, Heyboer
went 3-for-4 in game two, scoring three runs and driving in two as she
collected a pair of doubles.

Senior Kara VanKooten (Anchorage, AK) went the distance for Calvin to pick up
her fifth victory of the year against five defeats. VanKooten struck out four
batters and walked two while allowing just one hit.

Calvin will now prepare for a pivotal conference doubleheader Thursday
afternoon when the Knights host league-leading Alma at 3:30 p.m. at the Gainey
Athletic Complex. Alma is currently 18-6 overall and 8-0 in the MIAA.
