CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR JANUARY 29, 2005
MEN'S BASKETBALL
The nationally-ranked Calvin men's basketball team remains tied for first place
in the MIAA standings after an 80-51 victory over Adrian Saturday afternoon at
the Calvin Fieldhouse.
Ranked 23rd in the latest D3hoops.com Top-25 poll, the Knights (15-4 overall)
are now 7-1 in league play as is Albion which gained a 73-63 victory at Olivet
Saturday. It sets up a showdown for first place next Wednesday night at
Albion's Kresge Gymnasium with the opening tip set for 7:30 p.m. Ranked sixth
in the latest D3hoops.com Top-25 poll, Albion handed Calvin a 68-65 defeat
earlier this month.
Calvin used defense and torrid three-point shooting to pull away for the
victory against Adrian as the Knights limited the Bulldogs to 30.4 percent
shooting while connecting on 12 of 20 (.600) from three-point range including
eight of 10 in the second half when the Knights outscored the Bulldogs 44-30.
Calvin broke open a tight game with a 16-2 run over the final 6:06 of the first
half - en route to taking a 36-21 halftime lead. Calvin continued the pressure
in the second half and used a 14-0 run early in the second half to put the game
away. Junior forward Andy Draayer fired in three consecutive triples during
the 14-0 run with senior Ricky Shilts also popping in a triple during the
spurt.
Draayer finished the game with a game-high 17 points on six of nine shooting
including five of seven from behind the arc. The Denver native also pulled
down six rebounds. Junior guard Kyle Trewhella was next with 14 points
including three triples with senior Dan Aultman adding nine points and senior
guard Josh Vriesman eight points.
Calvin shot 48.3 percent overall including 51.6 percent in the first half.
Adrian (11-7 overall, 5-3 MIAA) was led in defeat by Adam Novak's 10-point, six
rebound effort. Calvin also held a 44-37 rebounding edge over Adrian including
35 defensive boards.
With the win, Calvin also reached the 15-win plateau for the 21st straight
year.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin concluded a rough week of action with a 99-89 loss at Tri-State
University Saturday afternoon. The victory was Tri-State's second-ever win
over Calvin including its first in MIAA-play.
Ranked second in the MIAA in defensive scoring average heading into Saturday's
game, Calvin allowed a season-high in points as the Thunder led 57-54 at
halftime and outscored Calvin 42-35 in the second half.
Calvin (14-4 overall, 8-3 MIAA) would grab the lead four times in the second
half but would never lead by more than two points.
Calvin's final lead came with 5:12 remaining as sophomore Lisa Winkle converted
a pair of free throws that put the Knights up 85-83. Tri-State (7-12 overall,
5-6 MIAA) would connect on four free throws over the next two minutes to take
an 87-85 lead. The free throws ingnited an 11-0 scoring run by Tri-State as it
vaulted out to a 94-85 lead. Calvin would break a four-minute scoring drought
with a layup inside by junior Sarah Winkle to bring the Knights within seven
but it would prove to be too little too late.
Calvin would shot 48.1 percent from the field and connect on five more field
goals than Tri-State. Tri-State would connect on 13 triples however to the
three of Calvin and would also hold a 10-point edge at the free throw line,
connecting on 20 of 35 at the stripe (.571) while Calvin was 10 of 13 (.769).
The Knights were led in defeat by the Winkle sisters as Lisa Winkle poured in a
career-high 28 points on 13 of 20 shooting while grabbing nine boards. Older
sister Sarah Winkle also had a career scoring-high off the bench with 17 points
along wtih five boards. Senior Rita Ouwinga was next with 16 points while
senior Kristen McDonald had 11 points and 10 assists.
Tri-State placed five players in double-figures in scoring with Kamilla Ruffer
leading the way with 19 points. Three of Tri-State's reserves also notched
double-digits in scoring as its bench outscored Calvin's reserves 45-24.
Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it hosts St. Mary's at 7:30 p.m.
at the Calvin Fieldhouse.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
ALBION -- The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams closed out
their dual meet campaigns with victories on Saturday as the Calvin men edged
Albion 118-113 while the Calvin women topped Albion 164-78 and St. Mary's
184-45.
The Calvin women close out their dual meet with an 8-4 record while the Calvin
men finish at 3-8.
In the men's competition, Calvin received individual victories from sophomre
Andrew Resseguie (Holland Christian HS) in the 50 freestyle (22.11), junior
Luke Bagnall (Marshalltown, IA) in the 200 IM (2:05.15), senior Peter
Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) in the 200 butterfly (1:59.64) and freshman John
Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) in the 100 freestyle (49.50). Calvin also swept
both relays, winning the 200 medley relay in 1:40.14 and the 200 freestyle
relay in 1:30.37. The 200 medley relay consisted of Peter Boumgarden, freshman
Lucas Seebeck (Grand Rapids Christian HS), John Boumgarden and sophomore Andrew
Bolles (West Ottawa HS). the 200 freestyle relay consisted of Bagnall,
sophomore Peter Tuuk (Grand Rapids Christian HS), freshman Peter Gronewold and
Bolles.
In the women's competition, Calvin took first place in seven individual events
with junor Abby Johnson (Grand Haven HS) and freshman Megan Diekema (Zeeland
HS) coming out as double-winners for the Knights.
Johnson took first place in the 200 freestyle (2:00.71) and in the 200
backstroke (2:13.96). Her time in the 200 backstroke was just six hundreths of
a second off Calvin's school record. Diekema took first place in the distance
events, winning the 1,000 freestyle in 11:05.04 and the 500 freestyle in
5:25.95.
Other individual winners for Calvin included sophomore Alex Wilson (Ellsworth,
OH) in the 200 breaststroke (2:31.01), freshman Stephanie Duncan (Long Grove,
IL) in the 100 freestyle (56..07) and sophomore Barbara Frazier (Placerville,
CA) in the 200 butterfly (2:23.99).
Calvin's 200 medley relay of Johnson, Frazier, sophomore Rebekah Weima (Grand
Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Kat Vinson (Kaneohe, HI/Puhahou) took first
place with a season-best tie of 1:54.24 while its 200 freestyle relay team of
freshman Andrea Homan (Ann Arbor Huron HS), freshman Anna Doud (Marshall HS),
sophomore Maria Moller-Gunderson (Lake Geneva, WI) and freshman Emily Nelson
(Caledonia HS) took first place with a time of 1:52.42.
Calvin will now prepare for the upcoming MIAA Championships scheduled to held
February 10-12 at the Holland Aquatic Center with Hope College serving as host.
