Calvin moved back into a three-way tie for first place in the MIAA standings
while snapping a four-game losing streak against rival Hope as the Knights
handed the Flying Dutchmen a 66-54 defeat in front of a near capacity crowd at
the Calvin Fieldhouse.
Monday's game was originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon but was
postponed two days because of a winter blizzard that swept through West
Michigan Friday night into Saturday.
During its victory over Hope Monday night, Calvin received word that it had
move back into the D3hoops.com Top-25 national rankings for the first time
since the 2000-2001 season as the Knights are ranked 23rd in the most recent
D3hoops.com Top-25 poll.
Calvin (13-4 overall, 5-1 MIAA) used defense to gain the win against the
Flying Dutchmen (7-10 overall, 3-3 MIAA) as the Knights held Hope to 20.5
percent field goal shooting in the first half in taking a 33-21 halftime lead.
Calvin used a 7-0 run early in the first half to jump out to a lead it would
never relinquish and used a 10-4 run over the final 3:17 of the half capped off
by an alley-oop slam dunk by sophomore Josh Meckes in the closing seconds.
Meckes would add another alley-oop dunk in the opening minutes of the second
half as Calvin was able to build a 19-point lead at 49-30 with 11:40 remaining.
Hope would score 10 unanswered points to cut the gap to nine at 51-42 with
9:20 left on the clock but would get no closer as junior forward Joel Hoekstra
delivered a clutch three-pointer from the wing and followed with a jumper in
traffic to put the Knights back up by double-digits to stay.
Hoekstra and Meckes had big efforts for the Knights with Hoekstra scoring 13
points and Meckes ripping down a game-high 13 rebounds along with eight points
two steals and two assists. Junior guard Kyle Trewhella also had a fine
evening with 14 points, five assists and four rebounds. Senior Ricky Shilts
added nine points, three assists and three steals with senior Dan Aultman
chipping in with eight points.
Junior Andy Phillips was Hope's top scorer with 12 points and eight boards
with senior Daane Griffeth adding 10.
Calvin finished the game with a 45.5 percent field goal clip while holding Hoe
to 31.4 percent field goal shooting.
"This type of (defensive) effort is something we've been working on since
Christmas break," said Calvin men's basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek.
"I could see it coming and when the crowd got into it tonight, our guys
really got excited."
Monday's game marked the 155th meeting between Calvin and Hope in a series
that Calvin now leads 79-76. Monday's victory marked Calvin's first win
against Hope since a 74-70 win in January of 2003 at the Calvin Fieldhouse.
Over 155 meetings, just seven points separate the two teams in the combined
scoring total of both teams with Hope holding the slim seven-point edge.
The second meeting of the year is scheduled for February 16 at Hope's
Holland Civic Center.
Monday's game was the first of three MIAA games for Calvin this week as the
Knights journey to Tri-State Wednesday and then host Adrian on Saturday.
"We'll have our hands full at Tri-State," said Vande Streek. "We've
got no room for a let-down. With the type of energy that Tri-State brings
every game, we'll have to be ready to give our best effort. We'll be
playing a team that has been improving rapidly and certainly deserves our
complete attention."

By Abby Zylstra
After a slow start, Hope defeated Calvin, 67-50, Monday night at the Calvin
Fieldhouse.
The game was scheduled for the previous Saturday, but it was postponed due to
the snowstorm that swept through West Michigan over the weekend.
Heading into the game, Calvin and Hope sat a half-game behind Albion in the
league standings at 7-1. Hope's victory allowed the Flying Dutch to move
into a first place tie with Albion as it improved to 8-1 in the league and 15-2
overall. Calvin is a game behind at 7-2 in the league and 13-3 overall.
With its victory, Hope also snapped Calvin's 11-game win streak while
extending its own win streak to eight games. Hope has now won its last six
games against Calvin at the Calvin Fieldhouse dating back to the 2000-2001
season.
Calvin took a 5-2 lead and held it for the first three minutes of the game.
However, that was the last lead the Knights would hold With the teams tied at
13, Hope went on a 12-0 run. The Knights cut the lead to seven with a couple
jumpers by senior Lesa Holleman [Chandler, MN/SW Minnesota Christian] and
senior Lisa Nanninga [Grand Rapids/ GR Christian]. Hope led at halftime,
32-22.
Sophomore Lisa Winkle [Grand Rapids/South Christian] scored a quick four
points at the beginning of the second half, cutting Hope's lead to six. Hope
returned with a seven point run to regain a 13 point lead. Four minutes later,
the Flying Dutch had another 11 point run, including eight points from junior
Bria Ebels. Senior Brittney DeRoos [Sheboygan, WI/Sheboygan County Christian]
scored three three-pointers in the last few minutes of the half, and freshman
Wendy Zigterman [Western Springs, IL/Timothy Christian] put up five points up
at the end of the game. Hope won the game, 67-50.
"We never got on track," said Calvin's head coach John Ross. "We never
really got anything going. Give Hope some of the credit for that. They played
extremely well, particularly on defense."
For the Knights, DeRoos led the team with 10 points and two steals. Lisa
Winkle grabbed a team high eight rebounds, a game high five blocks, and put up
seven points. Nanninga brought down seven rebounds and contributed six points.
Senior Kristen Mc Donald [Grand Rapids/West Catholic] dished out a team-high
five assists.
"We played very well tonight," said Hope's head coach Brian Morehouse.
"A lot of different people pitched in. There was a good balance across the
board."
For the Flying Dutch, Ebels led with a game-high 17 points. Sophomore Ellen
Wood put up fourteen points and blocked two shots. Senior Adelynn Vilmann
brought down a team high eight rebounds. Sophomore Julie Henderson and junior
Megan Noll both dished out six assists and freshman Jordyn Boles had five
assists and five steals.
We played very well, especially defensively," said Morehouse. "We're
winning because of our defense."
Both teams brought down 38 rebounds. Hope scored 42 points in the paint
compared to Calvin's 14.
Calvin also played without freshman Charis Larson who sat out the game with in
injury.
"The stats may not always show it but Charis Larson is a very important part
of our team. That's hard to replace. That was a big loss for us," said
Ross. "We definitely missed her enthusiasm and energy."
The Knights return to action Wednesday night to take on Alma at 8:00 p.m.
