CALVIN SPORTS REPORT (Part One) FOR JANUARY 15, 2005

MEN'S BASKETBALL

OLIVET * Heading into Saturday's game at Olivet, Calvin junior guard Kyle Trewhella (Rockford HS) was listed as doubtful to play after sustaining an ankle injury in a Wednesday victory over Kalamazoo that left him on crutches for the next two days.

At the conclusion of Saturday's 98-68 victory at Olivet, Trewhella had left no doubt of his availability as he popped in 20 points including six three-pointers in helping the Knights (11-4 overall, 3-1 MIAA) move into a three-way tie for second place in the MIAA along with Adrian and Alma.

Calvin remains a game behind league-leading Albion (4-0 MIAA) which held off Tri-State 102-97 on Saturday afternoon at Albion's Kresge Gymnasium. Calvin will journey to Alma on Tuesday night in a meeting of second place teams with the game scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Alma's Cappaert Gymnasium.

Trewhella's shooting performance on Saturday was not a surprise but his ability to play was according to head coach Kevin Vande Streek. "I'm not surprised with the way Kyle shot the ball because he's such a great shooter but I am surprised that he was able to play," said Vande Streek. "Before the game his ankle still didn't look good and we weren't planning on playing him but Kyle said he was ready to go. He showed a lot of heart and toughness to play the way he did."

Trewhella was one of two players to rack the 20-point plateau as senior Dan Aultman (Mason County Central HS) collected a team-high 21 points on 10 of 13 shooting from the floor. Aultman was one of five Calvin players to reach double-figures in scoring as juniors Joel Hoekstra (Unity Christian HS) and Andy Draayer (Denver, CO) had 13 and 11 points respectively. Senior Brad Sall (Unity Christian HS) just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds along with four steals.

"Brad Sall has been a great asset for our team this year," said Vande Streek. "His dedication and work ethic has made him into a valuable player. He's been a big part of our team's success thus far."

Calvin shot 62.5 percent from the floor in the first half in rolling out to a 56-26 first half lead. Calvin took control of the game by scoring 20 unanswered points in building a 38-11 first half lead.

Olivet (6-9 overall, 0-4 MIAA) would come back to cut the deficit to 21 points in the second half but would get no closer.

Calvin finished the game with a 54.7 percent field goal clip overall while connecting on 43.5 percent (10 of 23) of its attempts from three-point range. Calvin also won the battle of the boards, outrebounding Olivet 44-26.

Olivet was led in scoring by Steve Johnson who collected 15 points while Jeremy File had 13 points off the bench.

Heading into Tuesday's game at Alma, Vande Streek likes the position his team is in. "We like where we're at as a team right now but we need to keep battling," said Vande Streek. "We have some tough games ahead but we've also played some tough games so far and I think that has prepared us for the rest of the season."

Calvin came from behind to defeat Olivet, 74-55 Saturday

Olivet (7-7, 2-4 MIAA) started strong and gained a quick six-point lead
but the Knights (12-2, 6-1 MIAA) had a 19-3 run to take the lead.
Olivet scored the next five points to make it a two point game, but Calvin held on for a 38-32 lead at half-time.

Sophomore Lisa Winkle [Grand Rapids/South Christian]
opened the second half by scoring six consecutive points for a 12 point Calvin lead.
The Knights increased their lead to as much as 22 points with a ten point run midway through the second half.

The victory sets up a showdown for first place in the MIAA standings between Calvin and Albion Wednesday night as the first half of the league schedule comes to a close. Albion (7-0) holds a one-game lead over Calvin with Hope (7-1) just a half-game back of Albion and a half-game ahead of Calvin in the conference standings. Hope has a conference bye Wednesday night while it awaits a showdown at Calvin next Saturday night. Wednesday's Calvin at Albion game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Albion's Kresge Gymnasium.

"We'll take a win by that big. It never felt like we had that big of a
lead," said head coach John Ross.

Winkle led the team in scoring with a game-high 23 points and game-high
8 rebounds. Senior Kristen McDonald [Grand Rapids/West Catholic]
scored 12 points, dished out a game-high eight assists, blocked one
shot. McDonald and freshman Lindsey Peuler [Grandville/Grandville]

Calvin's bench supplied 16 of the points. "Our bench stepped up big for
us," said Ross. "That was good to see."

Kari Searles led Olivet with18 points, Stephanie Smith scored 15 points
and grabbed five rebounds, Emily Fix put up12 points and had three
steals.

"We did a much better job defensively the second half," said Ross.
