WOMEN'S SOCCER

Three first-half goals lead the Knights (10-4-1, 9-1-1 MIAA) to a 3-0 victory over the visiting Olivet College Comets (5-9-0, 3-7-0 MIAA) on a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon. Calvin used the victory to up its lead to five points in the MIAA standings over Hope College, which was idle in the league Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Calvin reached the double-digit plateau in victories for the 16th consecutive year.
First half action began and ended in the Olivet College end of the field with Calvin taking 11 shots to only one for the Comets. Calvin's first goal came in the 19th minute on a breakaway by sophomore Jill Capel (Unity Christian), scoring the first of her two goals on the day. Less than two minutes later, junior Kara Zuidema (Escondido Calvin Christian) scored her seventh goal of the season with the assist going to Capel. In the 39th minute of the first half, Capel scored her second unassisted goal of the afternoon on a rebound off the goalkeeper.
The Knights were held scoreless in the second half, but had their chances to score on the strength of 16 second half shots, eight of which were saved by Olivet goalkeeper Gretchen Ford.
The shot chart was tipped heavily in the direction of the Knights, outshooting Olivet 27-3, with Calvin putting 14 shot on goal. Calvin goalkeeper junior Linda Heilman (South Christian) played another ninety minutes of shutout soccer for her fourth shutout of the season. Calvin's defense kept the Comet attack away to the extent that Heilman had to make no saves throughout the match.
The Knights next travel to Holland, Michigan where they will be met by the Flying Dutch of Hope College Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.

MEN'S SOCCER
After suffering a disappointing 1-0 defeat at rival Hope Tuesday afternoon, Calvin bounced back in convincing fashion on Saturday with a 5-0 victory over the visiting Bulldogs of Adrian. Saturday's game marked the 10th shutout victory of the season for the Knights who improved to 12-1-1 overall and to 7-1-0 in the MIAA.
The Knights remain three points back of league-leading Hope which gained a 9-0 conference victory over Tri-State Saturday.
In its win over Adrian (4-8-2, 2-6-0 MIAA) Calvin scored all five of its goals in the second half with the first three goals coming in a flurry of just five-and-a-half minutes early in the second half.
Senior Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) finished the match with two goals and an assist to raise his season point total to 32 points (14 goals, 4 assists). Sophomore David Holwerda (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had a goal and an assist with sophomore Maurice Wright (Wauwatosa, WI) and junior Levi Kool (Holland Christian HS) netting single goals.
Wright's goal completed Calvin's scoring and came on a thunderous rebound shot from the 20-yard line off a corner kick scramble. Kool's goal put the Knights on the scoreboard in the 58th minute of play and marked his first goal of the year. Kool leads the Knights in assists with eight.
Also picking up assists in the Saturday victory were senior Joel VandeKopple (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Jared Litty (Hudsonville HS).
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Albion for a 4:00 p.m. conference match.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
The top-ranked Calvin men's cross country team continued to pick up steam as the Knights took first place at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational with a team score of 30 points, 50 points ahead of 15th-ranked Carleton College (MN), 30 points ahead of 19th-ranked Augustana (IL), 65 points ahead of fourth-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point and 92 points ahead of 14th-ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh. In the women's competition, Calvin made some positive strides in taking fourth place with a team score of 102 in a field of nationally-ranked teams.
In the men's competition, Calvin put five runners in the top 10 led by senior Jeff Engbers (Whitinsville, MA) in a fourth place time of 24:56 with senior teammate Hendrik Kok (Lynden, WA) crossing the line in a fifth place time of 24:58. Calvin's third man was sophomore Tim Finnegan (Los Alamos, NM) who placed seventh in 25:04 with senior Dave Haagsma (South Christian HS) ninth (25:16) and senior Andy Yazzie (Rehoboth, NM) 10th (25:20) as just 24 seconds separated Calvin's top five runners. Rounding out the top seven for the Knights were sophomores Ben Hammer (Williamsburg) in 16th place (25:27) and Bill Reynolds (Newtown Square, PA) in 17th place (25:34).
Running unattached, Matt Thull took first place individual honors with a time of 24:48.
"We had a great team performance," said Calvin men's cross country coach Brian Diemer. "Jeff Engbers had a breakthrough race this afternoon and showed that he will be someone to watch at the end of the year. I was also very pleased with how Ben Hammer and Bill Reynolds ran today. Beyond our top five runners, we've had a few donut holes this fall and those two really stepped up and filled some gaps today. They are both very important to the future of this program."
In the women's competition, second-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point and fourth-ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh battled to a first place tie of 30 points each. North Central (IL) was third with 70 points and Calvin fourth.
The race was won by Liz Woodworth of Wisconsin-Oshkosh - the 2003 NCAA III National Runner-up * in a time of 17:01. Calvin's top finisher was junior Lindsay Kroonenberg (Denver, CO) in a time of 19:05 with sophomore Lydia Singer (Wilmington, DE) 18th (19:20); sophomore Laura Holtrop (Derwood, MD) 23rd (19:46); freshman Jenny Zylstra (Lombard, IL) 24th (19:54) and sophomore Melissa VandenBerge (Grand Rapids Christian HS) 25th (19:57). Rounding out Calvin's finishers were sophomore Bethany Hofman (Holland Christian HS) in 27th (20:17) and freshman Christina Overbeck (Seattle, WA) in 28th (20:18).
"I think we took another positive step forward today," said Calvin women's cross country coach Nancy Meyer. "We ran against very stiff competition but I thought we also ran well. We still have room for improvement but this was another confidence booster. Our goal now is to focus on running the conference championships on our home course in two weeks."
Both Calvin cross country teams return to action on October 30 when they host the MIAA Championships on its new course, located on the Gainey Athletic Complex. The meet will mark the first collegiate races on the new course with races scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
VOLLEYBALL
Calvin closed out competition at the Elmhurst Invitational with a 2-2 record as the Knights defeated Concordia of Illinois 33-31, 30-21, 30-19 but fell to nationally-ranked Wisconsin-Platteville 26-30, 30-24, 30-11, 30-22 on Saturday.
Calvin is now 17-7 overall heading into a Tuesday night conference match at Kalamazoo. In its win over Concordia, Calvin received 16 kills and six blocks from senior Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian HS) while junior Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) had nine kills and four blocks. Freshman setter Katie Zondervan (Lakewood, CA) was also superb with 46 assists, 15 digs and three service aces. Sophomore Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA) added eight kills and five blocks. As a team, Calvin posted a hitting percentage of .330 agaisnt Concordia.
In its loss to 11th-ranked Wisconsin-Platteville, Vogel paced the Maroon and Gold with 14 kills while Kuipers had 13 kills and seven blocks. Zondervan had 47 assists and senior Kristin DeGroot (Tulare, CA) 18 digs.
For her efforts over the course of the weekend, Kuipers was named to the all-tournament team, marking her second all-tournament appearance of the season. In Calvin's four matches at the Elmhurst Invitational, Kuipers posted a hitting percentage of .313 and averaged 3.5 kills and 1.93 blocks per-game.
Tuesday's match at Kalamazoo is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
