WOMEN'S GOLF
A strong performance at the two-day MIAA Tournament has allowed the Knights of Calvin to finish fifth in the final MIAA standings.
Calvin posted a team score of 373 on the second and final day of competition Saturday to finish with a two-day total of 742. Coach Jerry Bergsma's Knights held a slim three-stroke lead over seventh place Hope and trailed fifth place Alma by two strokes. Calvin's performance at the MIAA Tournament held at the Bedford Valley Country Club allowed the Knights to hold off Hope while also slipping past Alma in the process to take fifth, two strokes ahead of Alma in the final standings and four strokes ahead of Hope.
St. Mary's captured the MIAA title by a commanding 70-stroke margin over second place Olivet with Albion taking third in the final league standings and Tri-State fourth.
In Saturday's 18-hole round, Calvin was paced by senior Dawn Svenkeson (Scandia, MN) who fired a sparkling round of 81 which placed her in a tie for fourth place in Saturday's individual standings. Close behind was junior Annie Huizenga (Unity Christian HS) with a round of 86 while junior Margaret Tassaro (Carnegie. PA) had a round of 99. Rounding out Calvin's finishers Saturday were sophomores Abby Stemler (Elk River, MN) and Megan Andrews (Midland) with respective scores of 107 and 112.
Huizenga finished 14th in the final MIAA individual standings with an average of 89.4 strokes-per-round, allowing her to break her own Calvin single-season scoring record of 91.0 strokes-per-round set in 2003. Tassaro and Svenkeson also broke Huizenga's old single-season record as Tassaro finished 15th in the individual standings with an average of 89.8 and Svenkeson 16th with an average of 90.4.
"We're very pleased with our conference finish," said Bergsma who saw his team move up a spot from it's sixth place 2003 finish. "Going into the weekend, we knew we had an opportunity to move up to fifth place. It was exciting to see our golfers step up to the challenge. It was a nice way to conclude the season."
Bergsma also cited the individual accomplishments of his top three. "I think it's pretty remarkable to have three players break the Calvin single-season scoring record," said Bergsma. "In past years, scores like that would be a lock for a top-12 conference finish but not this year. It shows the high quality of women's golf in our conference and how far the game has improved at the small college level."
