CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2004

MEN'S SOCCER

The nationally-ranked Calvin men's soccer team continued to roll as the
Knights picked up a 3-0 victory over Alma Tuesday afternoon at Calvin Field.

Ranked fourth in the latest Division III Top-25 poll and number-one in the
Great Lakes Region, Calvin (9-0-1 overall, 4-0-0 MIAA) stretched its unbeaten
streak at home to 15 games while posting its seventh shutout victory of the
year including fourth straight in conference play.

Calvin's number-four national ranking is the highest in Calvin soccer
history. The national poll can be found on-line at:

Calvin was forced to withstand a strong first-half charge by the visiting
Scots (2-7-0 overall, 2-1-0 MIAA) as Alma played with a strong wind at its back
and also came out aggressive. The result was four quick shots by the Scots
with Calvin junior goaltender Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS) up to the
task with four quick saves.

After the opening surge by Alma, Calvin began to match the intensity of its
opponent and created a handful of quality scoring opportunities. The Knights
then broke through for the first goal of the game 20th minute as sophomore
Maurice Wright (Wauwatosa, WI) sent a perfectly placed chip to the right side
of the box. The chip was collected on the fly by junior Matt Cosnek (Hopewell,
PA) and Cosnek made no mistake as he whipped in a shot for his fifth goal of
the year.

Seven minutes later, Calvin senior Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) sent a
loose ball to the feet of senior Joel VandeKopple (Grand Rapids Christian HS)
in close and VandeKopple responded with a blast that deflected off an Alma
defender and over the head of goaltender Kyle Lieberman, giving the Knights a
2-0 lead.

Calvin then picked up an insurance goal three minutes into the second half as
Cosnek set up freshman Jared Litty (Hudsonville HS) for a breakaway up the left
wing with Litty beating the keeper with a deke and completing the play with a
shot into a wide-open net.

Calvin continued to dominate play over the final 40 minutes of regulation but
would not score again.

Westra and sophomore goaltender Alex Vogelzang (Holland Christian HS) combined
on the shutout in goal for the Knights with Westra recording four saves and
Vogelzang one. The shutout is the seventh of the year for Westra including the
18th of his collegiate career.

Calvin finished the match with an 18-9 shots at goal advantage including a
13-3 edge in the second half when the Knights had the wind at their backs.

The game was a physical one as the two teams combined for 40 fouls with Alma
committing 24 and Calvin 16.

Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Kalamazoo for a 1:30
p.m. contest at MacKenzie Field.

VOLLEYBALL

(Written by Abby Zylstra, '08)

Calvin holds on to sole possession of second place in the MIAA standings after
defeating Adrian on Tuesday, Sept. 28, at the Fieldhouse.

The Calvin Knights swept the Adrian Bulldogs in three games, 30-15,
30-13, and 30-14.

Calvin is now one victory ahead of third place Kalamazoo and one loss behind
undefeated Alma. Kalamazoo nearly handed Alma its first defeat of the season
Tuesday night before falling five games to the Scots.

Calvin (12-5 overall, 7-1 MIAA) started the night by taking the first point of
the game. Adrian (7-10 overall, 4-4 MIAA) quickly came back and the two teams
battled for the first nine points of the game. The only time Calvin would fall
behind happened during the early portion of the game. Calvin scored four
consecutive points, giving the Knights a 12-9 lead. Adrian scored no more than
one point at a time for the rest of the game while Calvin had a couple
five-point runs. Adrian managed to get a couple points in between Calvin's
runs, but Calvin pulled off the win, 30-15.

Calvin allowed Adrian the first point of the game, but Calvin quickly
scored a five-point lead. Calvin had lots of little two or three point
runs, but Adrian wasn't able to score more than one point until the end
of the game. After Adrian's only set of consecutive points that game,
Calvin won the game on a four-point run, 30-13.

Adrian captured the first point of the third game, but Calvin rebounded
with another five-point run. Calvin took another demanding lead with
several consecutive scores. The third game went quickly - Calvin had a
six-point dash to the win, 30-14.

"Tonight things came together nicely," said head coach Amber Warners.
"I was pleased with the effort. I was happy with the intensity."

"It went well," said freshman setter Katie Zondervan [Lakewood, Cal.].
We stepped it up a lot from this weekend."

According to Warners, not one player really sticks out in her mind as a
key player.

"We played together more," said Zondervan.

The Knights had several key players in the game. Zondervan led the
Knights in setting with 32 assists. Sophomore Christine Hendricks
(Cincinnati, OH led in kills with 15, senior Kara Kuipers [Hudsonville, Mich.]
had 11 kills and sophomore Lorilyn Vogel [Orange City, Iowa] had 10 kills.
Senior Kristin DeGroot [Tulare, Cal.] led the team with 14
digs. Kuipers also led the team at the net with three blocks.

The Bulldogs also had several key players. Sophomore Nicole Wilson
[Hillsdale] had 18 kills, Lauree Dermyer followed with 17 kills.
Sophmore Abby Sikora [Ceresco] had 16 set assists. Freshman Jessica
Beckman [Napoleon] led the team in six digs.

"You never know with Adrian," said Warners. "They've been dangerous
to play in the past. I was happy with the outcome."

Calvin returns to play on Friday, October 1 at Hope College in Holland
at 6:30 p.m.
