CALVIN THROWER QUALIFIES FOR CANADIAN OLYMPIC TRIALS

Calvin freshman Megann VanderVliet has qualified for the Canadian Olympic Track and Field Trials in the shot put. Scheduled for July 9-11 in Victoria, British Columbia, VanderVliet qualified for the trials with a first place throw of 13.44 meters (44-1 1/4) this past Friday night at the North Central College Dr. Keeler Invitational. The qualifying mark for the Canadian Olympic Trials is 13.40 meters.

A native of Oakville, Ontario and a graduate of Oakville Trafalger High School, VanderVliet is now fifth on the Canadian list this spring in the women's shot put.

VanderVliet is the first female athlete from Calvin to qualify for the Canadian Olympic Trials. Her throw of 13.44 meters Friday night was also a strong NCAA III provisional qualifying mark and stands a good chance of landing her a spot in the field of the upcoming NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. VanderVliet is one of three individuals from the Calvin women's track and field team to rank among the top-15 on the national list in the shot put as senior Katie Corner (Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS) and junior Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also rank high on the list.
