CALVIN BASEBALL PLAYERS RECEIVE ALL-MIAA HONORS

Four members of the Calvin baseball team have received All-MIAA honors.

Named to the All-MIAA first team from Calvin is sophomore pitcher Jim Deters.
Named to the All-MIAA second team from Calvin are senior catcher Darrell
Heuker, junior shortstop, Josh Vriesman and sophomore utility man Mike Aggen.

A native of Portage and a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School, Deters
is making his second appearance on the All-MIAA first team after receiving the
honor in 2002 as a freshman. Deters missed the bulk of the 2003 campaign
because of an injury but returned this spring to record a 5-3 overall record
and a 3-3 record in conference play that included a 2.12 ERA. Deters was named
MIAA Pitcher once during the year and was credited with a pair of shutout
victories in league play. He finished the conference season with a
league-leading 50 strikeouts along with a league-leading 49.2 innings pitched.
Of his three conference defeats, one was a 2-1 loss to rival Hope in 10
innings. He also was credited with a 1-0 shutout win over league runner-up
Adrian and a 7-3 victory over MIAA champion Albion.

Heading into next spring, Deters has a career won-loss record of 12-3 in
conference games.

Heuker is from Hudsonville and is a graduate of Unity Christian High School.
A three-year starter for the Knights including a two-year starter behind the
plate, Heuker batted .321 in league play along with three homeruns, nine runs
scored and eight runs batted in. He also threw out nine base runners
attempting to steal out of 24 attempts. Heuker finished tied for second in the
league in home runs and fifth in slugging percentage (.554).

Vriesman is from Denver, Colorado and is a graduate of Denver Christian High
School. A three-year starter at shortstop, Vriesman batted .368 this spring
with 11 runs scored, seven stolen bases and six runs batted in. Vriesman
finished ninth in the MIAA batting race, sixth in base hits (21) and fourth in
stolen bases.

Aggen is from Evergreen Park, Illinois and is a graduate of Evergreen Park
Community High School. He batted .328 in league play along with five runs
batted in and five stolen bases. Aggen split time at the designated hitter
position, in the outfield and occasionally behind the plate. Aggen finished
third in the MIAA in base hits (22) and seventh in stolen bases.

Also receiving honorable mention recognition from the MIAA coaches were
sophomores Andy Draayer, Kyle Hollemans and Tyler VanEps. Draayer is from
Denver, Colorado and a graduate of Denver Christian High School. Draayer
compiled a 1-3 pitching record in league play this spring with a 2.48 ERA while
also seeing duty in the outfield. A third baseman, Hollemans is from Kentwood
and is a graduate of East Kentwood High School. He batted .293 in league play
with four runs scored and four RBI's. A second baseman, VanEps is also from
Denver, Colorado and is a graduate of Denver Christian High School. VanEps
batted .224 in league play but had five extra-base hits and a fielding
percentage of .970.

Calvin finished the year with a 15-25 overall record and took sixth in the
MIAA with a 6-12 league mark.

JEANNE COLE AND ANGIE SIETSEMA RECEIVE ALL-REGION SOFTBALL ACCOLADES

A pair of Calvin softball players have received Division III All-Central
Region honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Named to
the All-Central Region second team from Calvin is sophomore Jeanne Cole while
Calvin junior Angie Sietsema has been named to the third team.

Both players are receiving all-region honors for the first time.

A shortstop, Cole hails from Fountain and is a graduate of Mason County
Eastern High School. This spring, Cole batted .318 with 13 RBI's and a
team-leading 20 runs scored. Calvin's leadoff hitter, Cole tied for the team
lead in base hits with 35 and led the team in extra-base hits with 10 which
included seven doubles and three triples. In addition, Cole amassed a slugging
percentage of .435 and swiped three bases.

In the field, she compiled a .958 fielding percentage, committing just five
errors in more than 110 chances.

Sietsema is from Grandville and is a graduate of Grandville High School.
During the 2004 season, Sietsema split time between catcher and leftfield. The
number-two batter in Calvin's lineup, Sietsema led the Knights in hitting
with a .326 average as she collected 31 hits in 95 at bats. She also picked up
10 RBI's and scored 12 runs. In addition, she produced a team-leading 12
sacrifice hits, often setting the table for Calvin's 3-4-and-5 hitters.

In the field, Sietsema recorded a .964 fielding average, committing only five
errors in 140 total chances. She also threw out eight base runners attempting
to steal.

Calvin finished the 2004 season with a 19-15 overall record and finished third
in the final MIAA standings.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The 2003-04 Calvin women's basketball team is listed 18th nationally among
the most-improved teams this past season. Calvin finished the 2003-2004 season
with a 23-4 overall record, an eight-game improvement over its 2002-2003
campaign when it finished 15-11.

To determine games improved, the NCAA statistical office adds the difference
in victories between the two seasons to the difference in losses, then divides
by two.
