SOFTBALL
KISSIMMEE, FL - The Calvin softball team could not hold a pair of leads as the
Knights dropped another pair of games on their annual Spring Break trip to the
Rebel Games in Kissimmee, Florida. Now 0-6 on the year, Calvin lost to
Manchester 5-3 and then dropped a 3-1 decision to St. Thomas (MN).
In game one it looked like the Knights would cruise to their first victory as
they tacked on three runs in the first three innings. The scoring began in the
bottom of the first as senior co-captain Keri Cole (Mason County Eastern)
singled driving in junior Angie Sietsema (Grandville) from second base. Calvin
continued to build its lead in the third inning behind the strong hitting on K.
Cole and Sietsema. Sietsema, the designated hitter, began the inning by
pounding a single up the middle and senior Rachel Dyksterhouse (Kalamazoo
Christian) followed by reaching base on an error, setting the table for K.
Cole. Cole responded by roping a double into the right-center gap that plated
Sietsema and Dyksterhouse.
The Knights could not keep up the frantic pace, however, as Calvin recorded
only two hits after the third inning. Manchester scored all five of its runs in
the fourth inning, with the major damage coming off of a two out bases-loaded
double that scored two runners.
Calvin used two pitchers during the contest with sophomore Jill Scholten
(Holland Christian) pitching the first 3 1/3 and junior Kara Van Kooten
(Anchorage, AK/Grace Christian) pitching the next 3 2/3 innings picking up the
loss. Scholten was tagged for three runs, while the two go ahead runs were
attached to Van Kooten.
In game two the Knights took an early lead as Jeanne Cole (Mason County
Eastern) scored on a wild pitch to give Calvin a 1-0 lead. That is where things
would stand until St. Thomas' Kaja Martinson released a solo homerun to
left-center field to tie the score at one run apiece. St. Thomas jumped out
front for good in the fifth inning as a line drive down the left field line
skipped all the way to the fence and the Calvin defense could not retrieve it
before a two-run inside-the-park homerun was awarded. The Knights tallied more
hits than the Tommies, but could not take advantage as Calvin left three
runners stranded.
Junior pitcher Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont) was credited with the loss, dropping
to 0-2 on the year. She worked six innings, gave up five hits, three earned
runs, six walks, and three strikeouts.
Calvin notched six hits over the course of the game including: Sietsema,
Dyksterhouse, K. Cole, Heyboer, Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH/Munroe Falls), and
Laurel Sands (Rockford).
On Thursday the Knights will play Manchester (8:50 am) and University of the
South (10:40 am). Check out www.calvin.edu/sports for all the details on the

KISSIMMEE, FL - The Calvin softball team fell to 0-4 on the young season,
dropping a pair of games in the second day of the Rebel Games in Kissimmee,
Florida. The Knights fell to St. Thomas University (MN) by a score of 4-2 and
lost to Ramapo College (NJ) 7-4 in the nightcap.
In the first game St. Thomas tacked on four runs in the fifth inning to open
up a 4-0 lead. The Knight tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the
seventh but were only able to garner two runs. The attempted Calvin rally
started with junior Lea Bareman (Unity Christian) beating out an infield
single. Bareman was retired as senior Rachel Dyksterhouse (Kalamazoo Christian)
grounded into a fielder choice, taking first base. Dyksterhouse advanced to
second base following an Angie Sietsema (Grandville) single and both scored
after a triple from sophomore shortstop Jeanne Cole (Mason County Eastern).
The Knights tallied six hits while committing only one error. Sietsema led the
way offensively for the Knights, going 2-for-3 from the plate. Four Knights
picked up one hits apiece including: Cole, Bareman, Dysterhouse, and Abby
Konyndyk (Grand Rapids Christian).
Junior Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont) started the game and pitched four scoreless
innings. Kara Van Kooten (Anchorage, AK/Grace Christian), who took the loss,
came on in relief and was tagged for four runs in three innings of work.
In the second game the Calvin defense did not support starting pitcher Ruth
Anna Spooner (Twin Falls, ID/Idaho School for the Deaf). Spooner pitched the
complete game and was tagged with the 7-4 loss in her first collegiate start.
She gave up nine hits, struck out three, and walked four batters. Of the seven
runs she gave up only one was earned. The Knights committed three errors, all
in the outfield.
Ramapo scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break the 4-4
tie and secure the win. Dyksterhouse and J. Cole each tallied two hits to lead
the Knights.
