CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MONDAY, MARCH 22 2004
SOFTBALL
KISSIMMEE, FL - The Calvin softball team did not envision its season to start
with a pair of losses. The Knights, however, dropped games to Millikin and
Otterbein to start their Spring Break trip at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee,
Florida.
In Calvin's first game against Millikin, the Knights did not support
starting pitcher Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont) with either defense or offense.
Heyboer, who pitched the complete game, picked up the 5-1 loss and was tagged
for only two earned runs. The Calvin defense committed four errors to only one
Millikin error.
The Knights could only muster eight hits, scoring one run, and stranding six
base-runners. Calvin was paced by junior Lea Bareman (Unity Christian) who went
2-for-3 from the plate. Six Calvin players also collected one hit including:
Laurel Sands (Rockford), Abby Konyndyk (Grand Rapids Christian), Heyboer,
Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH/Munroe Falls), Rachel Dyksterhouse (Kalamazoo
Christian), and Angie Sietsema (Grandville).
Calvin scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Sands began
the inning with a single up the middle. Konyndyk followed with another single
advancing Sands to second base with only one out. Bareman was next and sent a
shot to left field that saw Sands get thrown out at home plate on a laser from
the Millikin outfield. As Konyndyk took third on the throw to home Millikin
tried to pick her off and threw the ball into left field. Konyndyk came into
score and Bareman took third. The Knights couldn't notch another run as the
rally was ended with a fly-out.
In the second game, a 2-0 loss to Otterbein, the Knights received a stellar
pitching effort from junior Kara Van Kooten (Anchorage, AK/Grace Christian) but
could muster no offense. Calvin notched more hits than Otterbein (8-to-5), but
stranded all ten runners it placed on base. The Cardinals scored in the bottom
of the sixth inning as a bases-loaded single scored two base-runners.
Van Kooten faced 27 batters and gave up only three hits while striking out
four batters and walking two. The Knights committed two errors and were led by
Dyksterhouse who went 2-for-2 from the plate and collected a double. Freshman
catcher Andrea Wagner (Unity Christian) and senior second-baseman Keri Cole
(Mason County Eastern) also collected two hits apiece.
Dating back to the final two games of its 2003 campaign, Calvin has now scored
just two runs in its last 31 innings played.
The Knights will play two games on Tuesday, competing against St. Thomas (MN)
(2:20 p.m.) and Ramapo (6:00 p.m.). Check out www.calvin.edu/sports for all the
details on the Calvin softball team's trip to Kissimmee, Florida.
BASEBALL
Calvin suffered a pair of defeats on Monday to drop to 1-2 on the season.
Calvin suffered a 5-4 defeat to Lawrence University of Wisconsin in its first
game after holding a 4-2 lead through six innings. In Calvin's second game,
the Knights were hammered by Shawnee College 15-5.
A full report of both games will be sent out on Tuesday as game statistics and
further details are not currently available.
