CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR JANUARY 31, 2004

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

While a contest against Tri-State University did not threaten Calvin's position in the MIAA, it did nearly end the Knight's win streak. Calvin posted a come-from-behind 70-64 victory over the Thunder to extend its win streak to 13 games.

After a first half performance in which Calvin shot 35.7 percent from the field, and made no three-pointers, the Knights trailed at halftime 34-28. After Calvin built up an eight point lead midway through the first half the Thunder responded with a 27-16 run to end the half.

Calvin came out of halftime calm and focused as the Knights rattled off six unanswered points to tie the score at 34. The Knights extended their lead to seven points 48-41 on a putback by Lisa Winkle, but Tri-State responded closing the gap to one point with 6:55 left in regulation with a pair of free-throws. That would be a close as the Thunder would creep as the Knights made their free-throws down the stretch and escaped with a 70-64 victory.

The Knights were led in victory by freshman Lisa Winkle (South Christian) who netted a career-high 27 points and pulled down 16 rebounds for her fourth collegiate double-double. She also totaled five blocks, two steals, and one assist. Junior Kristen McDonald (Grand Rapids West Catholic) added 17 points (15 in second half), four assists, and four rebounds. Rounding out the double-digit scorers for the Knights was junior Rita Ouwinga (Marion/NM McBain Christian) as she added 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the floor.

The Knights will return to action on Wednesday, February 4, traveling to St. Mary's College (IN) for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off. On January 6, Calvin defeated the Belles 60-38 at the Calvin Fieldhouse.
