CALVIN SPORTS REPORT PART ONE FOR 11-22-03

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Calvin's bid for its third consecutive Tip-Off Tournament crown fell short on
Saturday afternoon at the Calvin Fieldhouse, losing to Ohio Northern University
73-65. The Polar Bears won the championship while Ohio Wesleyan finished third,
downing Grace Bible College 100-85 in the consolation final.

Calvin (1-1) trailed throughout the first half, falling into deficits as big
as eight points, before arriving at the wrong end of a 33-27 halftime score.
The Knights shot 40 percent from the floor in the half, but were out-rebounded
by six. The Polar Bears were red-hot from behind the arc in the first half,
connecting on 5-11 attempts and 53.8 percent of shots from the floor.

In the second half the Knights were able to cut the Polar Bear lead to two
points on a Chris Prins (Escondido, CA/Escondido Calvin Christian)
three-pointer with 14:50 left in the game. That would be as close as Calvin
would creep as Ohio Northern extended its lead to 16 points on a made lay-up
with 6:29 left in the game.

The Polar Bears (2-0) finished the game shooting 52.1 percent from the floor
and 41.2 percent from three-point range. Calvin shot 38.2 percent from the
floor, including a dismal 17.6 percent (3-17) from behind the arc. Ohio
Northern also dominated the boards grabbing 37 rebounds to Calvin's 25.

The Knights were led by Prins who scored 21 points, including 6-6 from the
free-throw line. In addition, Prins was named to All-Tournament team. Junior
Dan Aultman (Ludington/Mason County Central) added 13 points and four rebounds
while senior Kevin Broene (Grand Rapids Christian) chipped in 12 points. Senior
Ryan Smalligan (East Grand Rapids) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

Ohio Northern was led by senior guard Jim Conrad, who netted a game-high 28
points and grabbed six rebounds. He was named the Tournament MVP, amassing 48
points on 17-35 shooting, eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Also
joining Conrad and Prins on the All-Tournament team were Kenny VanRyn (Grace
Bible College), Ben Chojnacki (Ohio Wesleyan University), and Billy Barkimer
(Ohio Northern University).

Calvin will return to action on Tuesday evening against Aquinas at home. The
game is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. with the women's basketball team taking
on Hope College at 7:30 p.m.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Naperville, IL - Calvin College brushed aside Coe College (IA) 82-43 in the
Holiday Inn Select Tip-Off Classic at North Central College. Calvin started 2-0
a year ago and stands at that point today.

Freshman Lisa Winkle (South Christian) scored six of Calvin's first eight
points to put the Knights up 8-5. Over the next five minutes, Calvin also used
a 12-2 run to go up 18-7. Calvin extended their lead to 39-15 by halftime.

Coe cut the lead to 21 early in the second-half, but never got any closer than
that. Junior Rita Ouwinga (NM McBain Christian) scored the first and last two
points of a 13-0 run the Knights put on Coe in the middle of the second half.

Calvin junior Kristen McDonald (West Catholic) led all scorers with 16 points.
Winkle added 10 points and six boards to go along with Andrea Estelle's eight
points and eight rebounds. Calvin shot 47% from the field and 32% behind the
three-point line for the game.

Calvin takes the court this Tuesday evening for their home-opener against Hope
College. The game is set to begin at 7:30 in the Calvin Fieldhouse.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

Both Calvin teams suffered MIAA dual meet losses to rival Hope Saturday
afternoon at Calvin's Bergsma Natatorium as the Hope men claimed a 129-105
victory over the Knights while the Hope women defeated Calvin 132-11.

The Calvin men are now 2-5 in dual meet competition this year while the Calvin
women are 4-3.

In the men's competition, Calvin took first place in seven of the 11
swimming events but Hope took first place in both diving competitions while
also using superior depth throughout the meet to pull away for the win.

Senior Brad White (Traverse City) took first place in two of the events for
the Knights, winning the 50 freestyle (21.90) and 100 freestyle (48.08) with
season-best performances. Sophomore Luke Bagnall (Marshalltown, IA) was also a
double-winner for the Knights, winning the 1,000 freestyle (10:38.18) and 500
freestyle (5:03.45). Both times were season-best efforts. Junior Peter
Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) was also an individual winner in the 200 IM with a
season-best time of 1:59.82. Calvin also swept both relay events as Bagnall,
junior Ryan Preston (Richmond, IN), Boumgarden and White took first place in
the 400 medley relay (3:36.39) while freshmen Peter Tuuk and Matt Herrema of
Grand Rapids Christian High School along with junior Andrew Mulder (Holland
Christian HS) and Boumgarden took first in the 400 freestyle relay with a time
of 3:15.12.

In the women's competition, Calvin took six of the 11 swimming events and
also scored a 1-2-3 sweep on the three-meter diving board but Hope's depth
again proved to be the difference.

Freshman Rebekah Weima (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Abby Johnson (Grand
Haven HS) were both double-winners for the Knights as Weima took the 100
freestyle (52.72) and 200 freestyle (1:54.78) while Johnson won the 200 IM
(2:12.82) and 100 butterfly (1:00.12). Johnson's time in the 100 butterfly
was a season-best.

Freshman Barbara Frazier (Fuller, CA) also keyed a 1-2-3 Calvin sweep in the
100 breaststroke in winning with a season-best time of 1:11.37 with senior
Brittney Stevens (Mankato, MN) taking second (1:12.88) and sophomore Laura
Miersma (Holland Christian HS) taking third (1:13.55). Calvin also won the 400
medley relay as Weima, Frazier, Johnson and freshman Liz Ingebrigtsen
(Bensenville, IL) clocked in with a first place time of 4:06.22.

In the diving competition, Calvin senior Sara TerHaar (Bradenton, FL) took
first place on the three-meter board (2:16.50) with sophomore Jodi Offringa
(Unity Christian HS) taking second (196.80) and junior Anna Battoclette
(Cincinnati, OH) taking third (196.25). TerHaar also took second on the
one-meter board with a score of 200.40.

Both Calvin teams return to action on December 5 and 6 when they compete at
the Eastern Michigan Invitational.
