CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2003
WOMEN'S SOCCER
The Calvin women's soccer team notched another win Saturday afternoon, downing
Alma 3-0, to run its win streak to seven games. The last time the Knights lost
a game was on September 20, when they dropped a 5-1 league decision to Alma.
Over the stretch of seven games that the Knights have rattled off, they have
outscored opponents 32-3.
The Knights improve to 6-2-1 in the MIAA and 8-4-1 overall and move into sole
possesion of second place in the MIAA standings.
Freshman Jill Capel (Unity Christian) got the Knights on the board first,
scoring 21:20 into the contest on a nice cross from Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo
Christian). The goal was Capel's fourteenth of the season and her third
game-winning goal. Senior Dana Haan (Lynden, WA /Lynden Christian) scored the
second Calvin goal, heading in a bouncing ball in front of the net for her
fourth goal of the year. The Knights scored their last goal of the game off the
foot of freshman Leah Scholten (Unity Christian), who netted a direct free kick
from 25-yards out.
Calvin goalkeeper Lisa Campbell (Gull Lake HS) earned the shutout in goal, her
fourth of the season. The Knights have given up only one goal over the past
four games.
Calvin will return to action on October 21, traveling to Kalamazoo for a 4:00
p.m. match.

MEN'S SOCCER
The Calvin men's soccer team traveled to Tri-State Saturday afternoon for a
non-conference match and came away with a 4-1 victory. The win was the sixth
straight for the Knights and 10th overall for the season, improving their
record to 10-4-0. The Knights have now reached the double-digit win plateau for
the 6th straight year and for the 24th time in the last 26 years.
The Knights scored first in the eighth minute when junior Joel Veldhouse (Sioux
Falls, SD) scored his eighth goal off a pass from sophomore John VanWylen (GR
Christian). In the 23rd minute, freshman Nick Capisciolto (Unity Christian)
scored an unassisted goal, his seventh of the season. Tri-State got on the
board less than a minute later when Matt Pulford scored for the Thunder.
Senior Geol Scheirman (Broomfield, CO) scored his first goal of the season for
Calvin in the 32nd minute with an assist going to Veldhouse. Freshman David
Holwerda (GR Christian) capped the scoring on the day with an unassisted goal,
his third, in the 80th minute. Goalkeeper David Shier (Niles) collected his
first varsity victory for Calvin, making five saves.
The Knights are now in third place in the MIAA, two points behind Kalamazoo
College, while Hope College falls one point behind the leading Hornets.
The Men's soccer team returns to action Wednesday with a pivotal home game
against first place Kalamazoo at 4:00 PM.

VOLLEYBALL
ANGOLA, IN -- Calvin moved back into a first place in the MIAA standings and
stretched its win streak to six as the Knights handed Kalamazoo a 28-30, 30-25,
30-15, 30-25 conference defeat and then topped host Tri-State 30-18, 30-15,
30-25 in a non-conference affair. Saturday's matches were hosted by future
MIAA member Tri-State in a triangular format.
In the win over Kalamazoo, Calvin had four players reach double-digits in kills
with sophomore Christine Hendricks (Cincinnatti, OH) leading the way with 18
kills and sizzling .459 hitting percentage. Freshman Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH)
was next with 16 kills while junior Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian HS) tallied
15 kills, eight blocks and five service aces. Sophomore Katie Schultz
(Escondido, CA) chipped in with 13 kills and 17 digs.
Sophomore setter Jill Scholten (Holland Christian HS) was also superb with 62
assists and 14 digs while senior libero Trisha Balkema (Highland, IN) racked up
30 digs, matching a career-high. Junior Kristen DeGroot (Tulare, CA) also had
22 digs and six kills.
In the win over Tri-State, Kalb had 15 kills and nine digs while Kuipers had 14
kills and seven blocks. Hendricks added 12 kills with Scholten recording 45
assists and 14 digs. Balkema also had 14 digs.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday night when it hosts Tri-State in another
conference match at the Calvin Fieldhouse. Tuesday's match will begin at 7:00
p.m.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
OSHKOSH, WI -- The nationally-ranked Calvin men's and women's cross country
teams produced a pair of strong performances in fields of nationally-ranked
teams at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational Saturday afternoon.
In the men's competition, fourth-ranked Calvin battled top-ranked and host
Wisconsin-Oshkosh to a first place tie of 36 points while also finishing 34
points ahead of third-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Calvin placed three
runners in the top 10 and five in the top 14 to combat Oshkosh which placed a
pair of runners in the top-five and four in the top 13.
Seniro Kris Koster (Grand Rapids Christian HS) came up with his finest
performance of the year in leading the Knights with a sixth place finish in a
time of 24:48. Senior teammate David Haagsma (South Christian HS) was Calvin's
second finisher, placing ninth in a time of 24:55. Seniors Tim Avery
(Rochester, NY) and Matt Edwards (Grand Blanc HS) were right behind with Avery
finishing 10th (25:01) and Edwards 11th (25:02). Freshman Tim Finnegan (Los
Alamos, NM) was Calvin's all-important fifth man, placing 14th in 25:23.
Finnegan made up several spots in the final mile of Saturday's 8K race and was
a key reason behind Calvin's first place finish.
Rounding out Calvin's top seven were junior Jeff Engbers (Whitinsville, MA) in
17th (25:34) and senior Brian Paff (National City, CA) in 18th (25:35). Junior
Andy Yazzie (Rehobath, NM) also cracked the top 20, finishing 20th in 25:38.
Matt Thull and former Calvin standout Joel Klooster finished 1-2 respectively
running unattached. Both runners clocked in with times of 24:31.
In the women's competition, sixth-ranked Calvin battled fifth-ranked and host
Wisconsin-Oshkosh to a second place tie of 49 points.
Third-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point posted a first place score of 34 points,
placing five runners in the top 10. Calvin was led again by its one-two punch
of seniors Sarah Hastings (Traverse City Central HS) and Jessie Lair
(Southfield Christian HS) with Hastings taking second (18:02) and Lair third
(18:12). Sophomore Camille Medema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was Calvin's
third finisher, placing 10th with a time of 18:45.
Calvin's next finisher was senior Tami VerMeulen (Holland Christian HS) in 14th
(18:53) with sophomore Jen Walter (Sharon, MA) placing 20th in 19:22. Rounding
out Calvin's top finishers were freshman Laura Holtrop (Derwood, MD) in 21st
(19:26), freshman Bethany Hofman (Holland Christian HS) in 23rd (19:32) and
sophomore Lindsay Kroonenberg (Denver, CO) 24th (19:34). Freshman Melissa
Vanden Berg (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was also 28th in 19:42.
Both Calvin teams will now break for two weeks with the next competition slated
for November 1 at the MIAA Championships, hosted by Albion at the Whiffletree
Golf Course.
