CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 30, 2003
MEN'S SOCCER
For the second straight game, Calvin played to a 1-0 score but this time the Knights ended up on the winning side of the column. On Saturday, Calvin (5-4 overall, 1-1 MIAA) suffered a 1-0 defeat at Kalamazoo in the MIAA opener for the Knights.
Calvin's MIAA home opener proved to be more kind as the Knights scored the only goal of the game in the 51st minute with freshman Nick Capisciolto (Unity Christian HS) whipping in a rebound shot past Albion goaltender David Melotti. The goal was the fourth of the year and came on a chip into the box by junior Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD). Melotti was able to punch the ball away but the ball was deflected back into the box with Capisciolto pouncing on the loose ball and blasting it home.
Calvin continued to threaten in the second half with junior Joel VandeKopple (Grand Rapids Christian HS) nailing the cross-bar with a left-footed rip with roughly 20 minutes left in regulation. Calvin finished the match wtih a 19-5 shots at goal advantage but Melotti was able to collect seven saves.
The Britons (2-5-1 overall, 1-1 MIAA) had a handful of quality scoring opportunities including a back-door rush by Eric Johnson inside the final 20 minutes of play that sailed just wide. Jeff Bennett also fed Brett Bonjernoor with a chip pass in the opening moments of the second half that resulted in a Bonjernoo shot that flew just wide of the far post.
Calvin sophomore Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS) picked up the shutout in goal and registered one save. Veldhouse had eight of Calvin's 19 shots at goal and was a dangerous scoring threat throughout the match.
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it hosts Adrian at 4:00 p.m. in an MIAA match.

ALMA * Calvin's trip to Alma College ended in defeat once again as the SCots (16-3, 6-1 MIAA) accumulated their third straight home victory against the Knights with scores of 30-21, 30-25, 31-29. Calvin fell to second place in the MIAA as Alma passed them and took over at 6-1 in league action
.
Alma started quick in game one and never relinquishing the lead, even though Calvin was able to score a couple points on Alma's game-point, the Scots put it away at 30-21. Game two was held close all the way through with tie scores at 5-5 and 12-12. Calvin trailed at 20-19, when the Scots opened a three-point lead. Alma never allowed the Knights to get within two and ran to a 30-25 victory. Game three was very similar to game two with the score being held close all the way through. The Knights captured a 29-28 lead, before giving up three straight points, the last of which was a kill attempt called out-of-bounds, to lose the final game 31-29.
Calvin stat leaders for the night included freshman Kristen Kalb (Stow Munroe Falls) who acquired 12 kills, junior Jill Scholten (Holland Christian) who added 29 assists, senior Trisha Balkema (Illiana Christian) who dug up 19 kill attempts, and junior Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian) who had four blocks (three solo). Junior Kristen DeGroot (Central Valley Christian) added 18 digs to help the Knights in the back row.
