DAILY SPORTS REPORT FOR TUESDAY, SEPT. 16, 2003

    MEN'S SOCCER

WHEATON, IL * Calvin put its undefeated record on
the line Tuesday night when it faced host Wheaton College in a
non-conference game under the lights of McCully Stadium. Wheaton flexed its
muscles and showed why it is nationally ranked by
shutting Calvin out, 3-0. Calvin falls to 3-1 on the
season, while Wheaton rises to 5-2 overall.

Wheaton came out quickly and struck gold in the sixth
minute of the match with a goal to go up 1-0. Not too
long after, in the 22nd minute, Wheaton added another
to obtain a 2-0 lead. The teams battled through the
rest of the half to finish at 2-0.

Each team looked to score the first goal in the second
half to try to gain momentum. The teams played until
the 77th minute when Wheaton scored the first goal of
the second half to put it up 3-0. Calvin had an
indirect kick just out side the box in the closing
    minutes, but could not convert.

Calvin sophomore goalkeeper Joe Westra (Grand Rapids
Christian) faced 14 shots on the night and accumulated
    three saves.

Tuesday night's meeting marked the 41st meeting between the two schools in men's soccer with Wheaton holding a 33-2-6 series edge.

Calvin will be back in action for the
Wisconsin-Oshkosh Valley Cup Invitational, starting Friday night
when it faces host Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 3:30 p.m.
