CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 15, 2003
(Written by Ross Weener, Calvin Sports Information Student Assistant in
Orlando, Florida).
SOFTBALL DROPS TWO DOWN SOUTH
Wisconsin-Stout 8, Calvin 7 (eight innings)
A one-run cushion going into the bottom of the eighth inning was not enough for
Calvin, as it fell to Wisconsin-Stout 8-7. This was the first game for the
Knights who are taking part in the 'Rebel Games' of Orlando, Florida. The week
will see the Knights play ten games at two sites as they rotate between the
Merrill Park Complex and Osceola County Park.
The Knights got out to a fast start, putting up four runs in the second inning.
Calvin used singles by sophomore Lea Bareman (Unity Christian), senior Becky
Austin (Pembroke, Ontario), freshman Jeanne Cole (Mason County Eastern), and
junior Trisha Balkema (Illiana Christian) to help manufacture fours runs on
just four hits.
Trailing 6-5 in the top of the sixth inning Calvin was able to gain the
equalizer using a Balkema deep sacrifice fly that scored senior catcher Emily
Mejeur (Kalamazoo Christian). After the seventh inning ended in a 6-6 tie the
commonly-used tiebreaker system was set into play. Calvin, the visiting team,
placed the last player to make an out the last inning on second base and picked
up its place in the batting order. The Knights were able to push one run across
using a Sandy VanLeeuwen (Unity Christian) single through the right side of the
infield pushing Bareman across the plate. In the bottom half of the inning,
Wisconsin-Stout used a double to score the runner placed at second and a deep
single to score the winning run, immediately ending the game.
Cole was tagged with loss (0-1), giving up three runs on five hits in relief of
starting pitcher Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont).
William Patterson 7, Calvin 5
After amassing a 5-1 lead going into the top of the seventh inning, Calvin saw
the wheels fall off, dropping a 7-5 decision to William Patterson. The Knights
gave up six runs on only three hits and aided the Pioneers with three errors.
Calvin was able to score five runs on seven hits, but was hurt by its five
errors committed. Leading the way offensively for Calvin was Lea Bareman
(Unity) who went 3-4 from the plate, including two RBI's. Trisha Balkema
(Illiana) added two hits and scored a run.
Sophomore Kara VanKooten (Grace Christian, Anchorage-AK) picked up the loss
although she pitched just an inning. The Knights left 10 runners stranded on
base.
Calvin, who falls to 0-2 on the young season, breaks until Monday when they
play at 2:20 and 4:20 pm.
