CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 28, 2003

MEN'S BASKETBALL

ALBION - In his final game in a Calvin uniform, the "Thrilla From Manilla"
gave a near capacity crowd of 1,352 fans a few more thrills.

Born in the Philipino capitol of Manilla in 1980, Calvin senior Jeremy
Veenstra notched his 29th career double-double with 29 points and 18 rebounds
in the MIAA Tournament semifinals Friday night at Albion's Kresge Gymnasium.

Veenstra's effort nearly allowed Calvin to edge rival Hope but when the
smoke had settled, the nationally-ranked Flying Dutchmen had come out on top by
an 81-80 score in overtime.

Veenstra's floater in the lane with one second left in regulation allowed
Calvin (16-11) to send the contest into overtime. Trailing 75-73 with nine
seconds left, Veenstra grabbed a missed free throw attempt by Hope, moved the
ball down court and threw up a soft shot in the lane that bounced straight up
off the back of the rim and down through the hoop with one second remaining. A
desperation attempt by Hope to move the ball down the floor was broken up,
sending the Calvin-Hope rivalry into its 11th overtime game.

In overtime, Calvin led twice, taking a 77-75 lead on a Veenstra baseline
drive and then taking an 80-77 lead on a three-pointer by junior Kevin Broene
(Grand Rapids Christian HS) with 2:39 left on the clock.

Ranked 11th in the latest D3hoops.com poll, Hope (22-4) regained the lead
behind four free throws from senior center Don Overbeek including a pair with
38 seconds remaining that put the Flying Dutchmen up 81-80.

Calvin then set up for a game-winning shot and with 11 seconds remaining,
Veenstra made a move to the basket. Triple-teamed in the lane, Veenstra threw
a pass to junior Chris Prins (Escondido, CA) standing outside the three-point
arc along the right side. Prins then put up a three-point shot that rimmed
out. Veenstra was able to corral the rebound with two seconds left but was
unable to get off a shot with three defenders draped around him on the
baseline, allowing Hope to hold on for the win.

The Hope victory sends the Flying Dutchmen into Saturday's MIAA Tournament
Championship game against top-seeded Albion (22-4) at 7:30 p.m. Hope has now
won six of the 11 overtime affairs with Calvin. Calvin leads the all-time
series 78-74 with just 13 points now separating the two teams in the rivalry
that now spans over 80 years and 152 games.

Veenstra's 18-rebound effort Friday was a career-high.

Broene and Prins also reached double-figures for Calvin with 10 points
apiece.

Hope was led by an equally impressive performance from Overbeek who also
notched his 29th career double-double Saturday night in scoring 29 points and
grabbing 14 rebounds.

In the first half, Calvin threatened to run away from the Flying Dutchmen,
connecting on eight three-point field goals including three in a span of two
minutes that helped put the Knights up 28-20 with 5:32 left in the half.

Hope outscored Calvin 10-6 over the final 4:44 of the half to trail just 34-30
at halftime.

In the second half, Hope grabbed a 39-37 lead with a 9-3 spurt capped off by a
three-pointer from freshman Jeff Carlson at the 18:19 mark. The lead would
then change hands six times over the next seven minutes with Hope then grabbing
a 56-55 lead on a free throw by sophomore Kyle Kleersynder with 9:52
remaining.

Hope would then build its lead to 72-65 with 3:27 remaining before the Knights
rallied with a furious comeback.

Calvin began the comeback surge with a pair of free throws by junior Josh
Berghuis (Unity Christian HS). The Knights would later climb to within at
point at 74-73 on a put back by Broene with 1:43 left. Overbeek then split a
pair of free throws with 58 ticks remaining, giving Hope a two-point lead.

With a chance to tie or take the lead, Calvin misfired on two attempts as a
three-pointer from freshman Joel Hoekstra (Unity Christian HS) was short and a
subsequent two-point shot by Berghuis with 11 seconds remaining was long.

Calvin then fouled Overbeek with 9.4 seconds left, sending the big man to the
free throw line. Overbeek's free throws both rolled in and out, setting up
Veenstra's game-tying dash up the floor.

Calvin finished with a 38.7 percent field goal clip overall but did manage to
shoot 50 percent (12-of-24) from three-point range with Veenstra hitting three
of four attempts from long-range.

Hope shot 44.4 percent overall but hit just four three-point shots. Both
teams went to the line with frequency with Calvin converting 20-of-26 attempts
(.769) while Hope was 20-of-31 (.645) at the charity stripe. Calvin held a
42-40 rebounding advantage. Also closing out their Calvin careers in
Friday's game were seniors Rob Dykstra (Tri-unity Christian HS), Tony
Westhouse (South Christian HS) and Nick Ploegstra (Cleveland, OH). Dykstra had
seven points and four rebounds including a pair of three-pointers in the first
half. Westhouse had six points, two rebounds and two blocked shots. Ploegstra
did not play because of an injury suffered earlier in the year.

Veenstra finishes his career second on the all-time Calvin rebounding list,
fourth on the all-time Calvin scoring list, fourth on the all-time assists list
and fourth on the all-time blocked shots list.

Calvin was making its 12th straight appearance in the MIAA Tournament
semifinals Friday night.
