CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 19, 2003MEN'S BASKETBALLPlaying in their final
regular season game at the Calvin Fieldhouse, a group of seniors went out on a
winning note as Calvin handed Alma a 95-72 defeat Wednesday night. Wednesday's
MIAA contest was the final regular season home game for Calvin seniors Tony
Westhouse (South Christian HS), Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian HS), Rob
Dykstra (Tri-unity Christian HS) and Nick Ploegstra (Cleveland, OH). Ploegstra
did not appear in Wednesday's game because of an injury but the other three
seniors did and provided plenty of highlights, particularly in the second
half.Veenstra and Dykstra finished with 14 points apiece with Dykstra grabbing
eight boards and Veenstra five caroms. With his five rebounds, Veenstra moved
past Darrell Banks of Kalamazoo and into 10th place on the all-time MIAA rebound
list. Westhouse wowed the crowd in the second half with a pair of slam dunks
and finished with four points and two rebounds. His first dunk left the crowd
buzzing for several minutes as he took a pass on the baseline, wound up with
plenty of bat speed and windmilled a one-handed slam over two defenders. In the
first half, Alma (1-23 overall, 0-12 MIAA) was the team that had the crowd abuzz
as the Scots rained down seven triples in the opening 20 minutes. Calvin led
14-5 in the opening five minutes before the Scots rallied with twelve unanswered
points to take a 17-14 lead. A three-pointer by Alma senior Cory Heitsch gave
the Scots a 37-32 lead with 2:53 remaining. Calvin (14-10 overall, 6-5 MIAA)
closed out the half with a 7-0 run, capped off by a three-pointer by junior
Kevin Broene (Grand Rapids Christian HS) that allowed the Knights to take a
39-37 halftime lead. With the game tied 46-46 with 17 minutes remaining, Calvin
began a 24-6 run to put the game away. Dykstra contributed nine points in the
scoring spurt to ignite his team and the crowd. Alma would get no closer than
16 points the rest of the way as the Knights pulled away for the double-digit
win.In addition to the 14-point efforts from Dykstra and Veenstra, Calvin had
five players reach double-digits in scoring with Broene leading the charge with
20 points as he connected on 8-of-14 from the floor and 4-of-6 from beyond the
arc. Freshman Joel Hoekstra (Unity Christian HS) also had a big evening off the
bench as he popped in 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds in 14 minutes of
playing time. Hoekstra was 4-of-7 from the floor, 3-of-4 from beyond the arc
and 5-of-5 at the charity stripe. Junior Mike Natelborg (Illiana Christian HS)
added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Maroon and Gold.Junior point guard
Josh Berghuis (Unity Christian HS) added five assists without a turnover.
Junior forward Chris Prins (Escondido, CA) also had seven points and seven
boards.Alma was led in scoring by senior forward Rob Taylor with 14 points while
sophomore Jo Baysdell had 13 points and freshman Carlton Hill 10 points.Alma
finished with nine three-point field goals but had just two in the second half.
The Scots shot 41.3 percent overall and 64.7 percent (11-of-17) at the free
throw line.Calvin shot 50 percent overall including 64 percent in the second
half. The Knights converted 11-of-27 attempts from three-point range for a 40.7
percent clip. Calvin was just 12-of-21 (.571) at the line but held a 52-24
rebounding edge.Calvin will close out its MIAA regular season campaign on
Saturday at Adrian in a game scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. at the Merillat
Center. The winner of Saturday's game will gain the home court for the first
round of the MIAA Tournament next Wednesday. If Adrian wins, the Bulldogs will
host the Knights the following Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the first round of the
tournament. If Calvin wins, the Knights will host either Adrian or Olivet at
7:30 p.m. next Wednesday. The MIAA regular season title along with the top seed
for the MIAA Tournament is also up for grabs as Albion and Hope both won games
Wednesday night, leaving them tied for first place in the league standings at
9-2. Albion will host Olivet Saturday while Hope will journey to
    Kalamazoo.OTHER MIAA MEN'S BASKETBALL SCORES WednesdayAlbion 72, Kalamazoo 64

Alma 0-12WOMEN'S BASKETBALLALMA -- Two long road games in the span of five days
proved to be too much for Calvin, falling 54-37 to Alma College in Cappaert
Gymnasium. The loss drops the Knights to 14-10 overall and 5-8 in the MIAA and
sustains them in a fifth place tie with Olivet. In the first six minutes of the
game the Calvin defense yielded 20 points, and its offense just could not keep
up. After the Scots built a 20-6 lead with 13:43 left in the first half they
continued to pour it on, finishing the half on a 15-9 run en route to a 35-15
halftime lead. Halftime allowed the Knights to refocus and reenergize as the
Knights took the court with something to prove. Unfortunately for Calvin the
hole was just too big and Alma just too deep in the post as the Scots rolled on
for a 54-37 victory. The Knights did outscore and outrebound the Scots in the
    second half 22-19 and 22-20, respectively. Calvin's 37 points was a season-low
in offensive output, spurred on by a meager 21.4 percent shooting percentage in
the first half. The Knights finished the evening shooting 26.9 percent from the
floor, including 0-11 from three-point range. Despite the loss Calvin did have
two individuals move on up career statistical charts. Senior Tricia Dyk (Western
Michigan Christian) moved into a tie for first place on the all-time steals list
with 268 career steals. Her two steals against the Scots moved her into the tie
with Sarah Ondersma who played from 1987-1991. Senior Emily Beard (Southfield
Christian) moved ahead of Sarah Burde-Tibbe (1994-1998) for sole possession of
fifth place on the career rebounding list with 538 rebounds.Junior Andrea
MacDonald (Allendale) led the Knights in scoring and rebounding, tallying 10
points and grabbing six rebounds. Fellow classmate Kim Wolthuis (South
Christian) added seven points while sophomore Lesa Holleman (Southwest Minnesota
Christian HS) dropped in six points. The Knights will return to action on
Saturday, facing the Adrian Bulldogs at 3 PM in the Calvin Fieldhouse.CALVIN
