CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 29, 2003

MEN'S BASKETBALL

An upset-minded Adrian team achieved its objective on Wednesday night as the Bulldogs upset league-leading Calvin 61-58 at the Calvin Fieldhouse.

 The victory was Adrian's first over Calvin since 1999 and its first win at the Fieldhouse since 1988. In addition, the Adrian victory knocked Calvin out of a first place tie with Hope and into a second place tie with Albion as the Flying Dutchmen improved to 5-1 in the MIAA with a 100-35 win over Kalamazoo Wednesday night while Calvin fell back into second with Albion at 4-2. Albion. Albion moved into a tie with Calvin with a 79-68 win over Olivet.

Ranked second in the Great Lakes Region, Calvin (11-7 overall) shot just 36.0 percent in the first half as Adrian took a 33-29 halftime lead. Calvin's first half shooting performance was its lowest in the first half at the Calvin Fieldhouse this year. Calvin tied the game at 16-16 on a three-pointer by junior Chris Prins (Escondido, CA) midway through the first half but never led in the opening 20 minutes. Adrian (8-9 overall) then built a seven-point lead at 40-33 with 16:52 remaining and still led 46-41 with 12:49 left on the clock.

Calvin then put together a 12-3 run capped off by a layup from senior Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian HS) with 8:16 remaining. Calvin had taken its first lead of the game at 50-49 on a free throw by junior Mike Natelborg (Highland, IN) moments earlier. Adrian refused to fold however and retook the lead at 53-52 on a layup by senior Dan Walter with 7:20 left. A three-pointer by junior Kevin Broene (Grand Rapids Christian HS) put the Knights up 55-53 and another three-pointer, this time by Natelborg, put Calvin up 58-55 with 4:04 remaining. Calvin would not score again though as Adrian clawed its way back on top, taking the lead for good on a hanger in the lane from senior Steve Brooks with 1:29 remaining.

Calvin turned the ball over with just over a minute remaining but got the ball back for one final shot after coming up with a defensive stop with 15 seconds left. Calvin was able to get off a shot with four seconds left but failed to connect. Adrian then sealed the game on a pair of Dan Walter free throws with one second remaining.

Calvin was led in defeat by Prins who collected 15 points while Natelborg had 13 and Broene 12. Calvin was 10-of-25 from three-point range for a 40 percent three-point clip but shot just 10-of-26 (.385) from inside the arc as Calvin shot 39.2 percent overall. Over the course of the game, Adrian held a 34-16 advantage in points scored in the paint as the Bulldog defense swarmed the Knights inside. Calvin was also 8-of-11 (.727) at the charity stripe. Adrian was led in scoring by Brooks who picked up a game-high 18 points while Walter had 16 points and Adam Novak 10.

 Adrian shot 47.1 percent overall including 54.2 percent in the first half. Calvin outrebounded Adrian 33-25, marking just the second time this year that Calvin has outrebounded an opponent and lost. Calvin opens up the second half of its MIAA schedule on Saturday when it travels to Kalamazoo for a 3:00 p.m. contest.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Calvin's bid for its MIAA road win came up short as the Knights suffered a 61-53 defeat at Adrian Wednesday night. The loss drops Calvin into sixth place in the MIAA standings at 2-5 while Adrian moved into sole possession of fifth place at 3-4 in the league.

Calvin (11-7 overall) led for much of the first half and held a 25-12 advantage with 5:58 remaining in the half. Adrian (10-8 overall, 3-4 MIAA) outscored Calvin 11-4 over the final five minutes of the first half however to close to within 29-23 at the break. Adrian then took a lead at 33-32 with 14:40 left. The lead would then change hands four times over the next 10 minutes with Adrian taking the lead for good at 53-51 with 1:51 remaining after Calvin had tied the game at 51 on a jumper by sophomore Kristen McDonald (West Catholic HS) with 2:17 left on the clock.

Adrian took a 53-51 lead on a jumper from senior Sarah Vincke. Vincke would then deliver two three-pointers in the final 1:26 to enable the Bulldogs to pull away for the win. Vincke finished the game with a career-high 36 points to lead Adrian to the win. She was the only Bulldog to reach double-digits in scoring but Adrian also held a 48-33 rebounding avantage including 20-10 on the offensive glass.

Calvin was led in defeat by senior Emily Beard (Southfield Christian HS) who picked up 13 points and six rebounds while McDonald had 12 points and senior Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan Christian HS) 11 points. Calvin shot 45.8 percent in the first half to Adrian's 16.7 percent first half clip.

Calvin's inability to put away the Bulldogs in the first half proved to be its undoing as the Knights shot just 32.4 percent in the second half while Adrian hit 41.9 percent of its second half attempts. The Bulldogs also finished with six three-point baskets on the evening while Calvin had three. Calvin opens up the second half of its MIAA schedule on Saturday when it hosts Kalamazoo at 3:00 p.m.
