CALVIN SPORTS REPORT PART TWO FOR DECEMBER 7, 2002
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
YPSILANTI -- Both Calvin teams closed out strong performances at the two-day
Eastern Michigan Invitational as the Calvin women took third in a six-team field
with 527 points while the Calvin men took fifth in a seven-team field with 332
points.
In the women's competition, Calvin received a first place and strong NCAA III B'
Cut qualifying performance from senior Katie Nagelkirk (Holland Christian HS) in
the 50 freestyle as she clocked in with a time of 24.27. Nagelkirk also took
sixth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:58.44. Another highlight was the
performance of freshman Abby Johnson (Grand Haven HS) in the 100 butterfly as
she took fifth with an NCAA III B' Cut qualifying time of 1:0.02 that missed
Calvin's 12-year old school record by just two tenths of a second.
In the three-meter diving competition, Calvin took sixth and eighth as junior
Sara TerHaar (Bradenton, FL) was sixth (307.8) and sophomore Anna Battoclette
(Cincinnati, OH) eighth (270.25).
In the 100 breaststroke, Calvin took sixth and 10th as senior Megan Bagnall
(Elgin, IL) was sixth (1:11.25) and freshman Laura Miersma (Holland Christian
HS) 10th (1:12.61).
Other top-10 individual performances for the Calvin women included senior Mara
McGuin (Oak Park, IL) amd freshman Lynn Visser (Jenison HS) in the 400 IM as
McGuin was eighth (4:57.28) and Visser ninth (5:00.05) while senior Allison
Gliesman (Macomb HS) was 10th in the 100 backstrokke (1:06.48) and senior Anne
Kuiper (Houghton HS) eighth in the 200 IM (2:17.82). Junior Brittney Stevens
(Mankato, MN) added a 10th place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 2:21.17.
In the 200 medley relay, Johnson, Bagnall, Kuiper and Nagelkirk took fourth in
1:53.47 while Johnson, sophomore Michelle Kool (Grand Rapids Christian HS),
Visser and Nagelkirk took fourth in the 800 freestyle relay with a time of
8:00.92. Calvin's 200 freestyle relay of Nagelkirk, Johnson, freshman Jen Kool
(Holland Christian HS) and Kuiper took fourth in 1:41.08 while senior Jenny Los
(Holland Christian HS), Bagnall, Juiper and Jen Kool took seventh in the 400
medley relay with a time of 4:20.61.
In the men's competition, Calvin rolled out three sparkling performances in the
100 butterfly as sophomore Peter Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) was third with an
NCAA III B' cut qualifying time of 50.79 while seniors A.J. Penninga (Grand
Rapids Christian HS) and Ryan Johnson (Grand Haven HS) just missed NCAA III B'
cut qualifying times as Penninga was ninth in 52.24 and Johnson 10th in 52.54.
Johnson chipped in with a 10th place finish in the 200 IM wiht a time of
1:59.38.
Penninga also sparkled in the 500 freestyle as he took eighth with an NCAA III
B' cut qualifying time of 4:41.86, missing a school record by three-tenths of a
second. In the 100 breaststroke, sophomore Ryan Preston (Richmond, IN) missed
breaking his own school mark by two-tenths of a second as he took 12th wiht a
time of 1:00.10.
Junior Brad White (Traverse City) also had a pair of top-10 individual efforts
as he took fifth in the 100 backstroke (53.89) and eighth in the 50 freestyle
(21.92). Freshman Luke Bagnall (Marshalltown, IA) added a top-10 performances
of his own as he placed 10th in the 100 backstroke (56.37). In the one-meter
diving competition, freshman J.D. Schaumberg (Zionsville, IN) was 10th with a
score of 152.80 points.
CAlvin's 200 medley relay team of White, Preston, Boumgarden and Johnson took
fifth in 1:36.22 while its 800 freestyle relay team of Penninga, Boumgarden,
senior Dan Hekman (Calimesa, CA) and Johnson took sixth in 800 freestyle relay
with an NCAA III B' Cut qualifying time of 6:57.79. Calvin's 200 freestyle
relay team added a fifth place time of 1:26.52 while its 400 medley relay team
of White, Preston, Boumgarden and Penninga took fifth with an NCAA III B' Cut
qualifying time of 3:29.59.
Over the course of the weekend, the Calvin men posted five NCAA III B' Cut
qualifying performances and shattered two school records while the Calvin women
came up with four NCAA III B' Cut qualifying performances.
Both teams will now break until January 1 when they compete at the College
Classic in Coral Springs, Florida. Both Calvin teams will be spending a week of
Christmas vacation training in Florida.
