CALVIN SPORTS REPORT PART TWO FOR DECEMBER 6, 2002

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams had a strong opening day
of competition at the Eastern Michigan Invitational on Friday as both teams
combined for a number of season-best and NCAA III B' Cut qualifying performances
    including two school record performances.

In the women's competition, Calvin senior Katie Nagelkirk of Holland Christian
High School posted her second NCAA III B' Cut qualifying time of the year as she
took third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.45 which ranks as one of the
best times in Division III this year. Nagelkirk also anchored Calvin's 400
freestyle relay team of freshmen Abby Johnson (Grand Haven HS) and Jen Kool
(Holland Christian HS) and senior Anne Kuiper (Houghton HS) that took fourth
with an NCAA III B' Cut qualifying time of 3:37.61.

Kuiper also led a strong contingent of Calvin swimmers in the women's 200
breaststroke as she took fifth with a season-best time of 2:31.81 while senior
teammate Megan Bagnall (Elgin, IL) came up with a career-best time of 2:33.86 in
taking eighth place. Junior Brittney Stevens (Mankato, MN) was also 11th in
2:35.29 while senior Deb Knott (Holland Christian HS) was 17th in 2:41.71. In
the women's 200 butterfly, Johnson was fifth with a career-best time of 2:14.53.

Another career-best time for the Calvin women came from freshman Lynn Visser
(Jenison HS) in the 1,650 freestyle as she placed ninth in 18:32.21. Close
behind was senior teammate Jenny Los (Holland Christian HS) who was 10th in
18:40.49 while senior Mara McGuin (Oak Park, IL) was 12th (18:54.57) and
    freshman Rebekah Sage 17th (20:14.18).

Also picking up a number of points for the Calvin women was its diving crew as
freshman Julie Erickson (Libertyville, IL) took eighth on the one-meter board
with a score of 156.05 while sophomore Anna Battoclotte (Cincinnati, OH) was
12th (143.55), junior Sara TerHaar (Bradenton, FL) was 13th (142.70) and
freshman Jodi Offringa (Unity Christian HS) was 14th (135.55)

Calvin's school record performances came in the men's competition as its 400
freestyle relay team of seniors A.J. Penninga (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and
Ryan Johnson (Grand Haven HS) along with junior Brad White (Traverse City) and
sophomore Peter Boumgarden took fifth with an NCAA III B' Cut qualifying and
school record time of 3:06.28, breaking the previous record of 3:06.47
    established in 2001.

Sophomore Ryan Preston (Richmond, IN) also turned in a school record performance
in the 200 breaststroke, taking 11th with a time of 2:10.28 that shattered his
own school mark by more than one full second. Preston's time was also just
three-tenths of a second short of an NCAA III B' Cut qualifying time.

In the 100 freestyle, Calvin went 8-10-12-15 with White taking eighth (47.17),
Penninga taking 10th (47.29), Johnson taking 12th (47.55) and Boumgarden taking
15th (47.78). All four times were season-best performances for each individual.

Both Calvin teams return to action on Saturday when they complete competition at
    the invitational.
