CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR 11-30-02

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Calvin saw its four-game win streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon as the
Knights were defeated by rival Hope 74-60 in the championship game of the Calvin
Thanksgiving Tournament in front of 423 fans at the Calvin Fieldhouse.

Calvin (4-1) battled the nationally-ranked Flying Dutch on near-even terms
through one half as play as the Knights trailed 36-33 at intermission. Hope
(4-0) had opened the game by outscoring Calvin 12-2 before the Knights rallied
with a 23-11 scoring run over the next 10 minutes to build a 25-23 lead. The
Calvin scoring run was capped by a three-pointer from senior guard Tricia Dyk
(Western Michigan Christian HS). A putback by freshman Linda Ebels put Hope
back on top 29-27 with 3:17 left and the Flying Dutch would never trail again.

Calvin kept the game close through the opening minutes of the second half,
trailing just 42-40 with 15:58 left to play but Hope answered with seven
unanswered points to build a nine-point lead and Calvin would never get closer
than seven points the rest of the way.

Calvin junior center Andrea MacDonald (Allendale HS) had another monster game
for the Knights as she collected 16 points, nine rebounds and a career-high nine
blocked shots, missing a triple-double performance by one rebound and one
blocked shot. MacDonald was named to the all-tournament by sophomore teammate
Kristen McDonald (West Catholic HS) who picked up 12 points off the bench.

Hope was led by senior center Amanda Kerkstra who picked up 16 points and nine
rebounds while tournament MVP Amy Baltmanis had 13 points and three assists.
Also reaching double-figures for Hope was Linda Ebels with 11 points while
senior Katie Nienhuis and sophomore Kelly Taylor added 10 points apiece.

Calvin shot 41.7 percent from the field while Hope shot 43.7 percent. The
difference in the game came on the boards as Hope outrebounded Calvin 45-37
including 25-12 in the second half. Hope was particularly affective on the
offensive boards, outrebounding Calvin 11-3 on the offensive glass in the second
half. Collectively, Hope finished the second half with 13 second chance points
to Calvin's five. In the first half, Calvin had collected 15 second chance
points to Hope's 10.

Calvin also struggled at the free throw line, converting just 7-of-14 attempts
for a frigid 50 percent clip while Hope was 8-of-13 (61.5%) at the charity
stripe.

Calvin had 19 turnovers overall with Hope committing 18 turnovers.

In the consolation game, Aquinas defeated Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference
opponent Cornerstone 82-76.

The final all-tournament team included Jessica Weston of Cornerstone, Jessica
Staubus of Aquinas, Kristen McDonald and Andrea MacDonald of Calvin and Amanda
Kerkstra and Amy Baltmanis of Hope with Baltmanis receiving tournament MVP
honors.

Calvin returns to action next Friday when it faces Tri-State University at 8:00
p.m. in the second game of another Calvin weekend tournament. Wittenberg (OH)
and Case Western Reserve (OH) will meet in the first game on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
with the consolation set for 1:00 p.m. Saturday and the championship for 3:00
p.m.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

A three-point shot by Calvin's Kevin Broene hit the mark one possession too
late, as the Knights fell to the Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins 85-84 in the
consolation game of the Holiday Inn Airport Tournament in Rochester, New York,
on Saturday.

The loss was Calvin's third straight, marking its first three-game losing
streak since the 1998-99 season.

The Knights rallied from a nine-point deficit midway through the second half to
take the lead with just over two minutes to play on a bucket by Chris Prins, who
led the Knights with 18 points and was named to the all-tournament team.

The Blue Jays' Kevin Marquez stepped up his game in the final two minutes of
play though, hitting a jumper and going 4-for-4 from the line as the Knights
were forced to foul in the final minutes of play.

It was an uphill battle for the Knights most of the game. Trailing 46-41 at the
half, the Knights struggled to defend the inside play of Johns Hopkins' Steve
Adams. The 6-6 senior tallied 30 points to lead all scorers most of them coming
from inside the paint.

Adams was big early in the second half scoring six of the first eight for the
Blue Jays building the early second-half lead to six. He tallied 19 in the
second half.

Keeping pressure on Adams often left an open Brendan Kamm, who was able to toss
in 12 points from the perimeter for the Blue Jays.

Calvin's play was balanced with junior guard Josh Berghuis scoring 18. He was
two-for-three from the three-point line.

Jeremy Veenstra was able to toss in 15, despite the tough inside defense by the
Blue Jays. Veenstra at 6-6 was defended by Adams, also at 6-6, and 6-8 Mike
Blaine.

Trailing by nine at the nine-minute mark, the Knights went on a scoring run
with a bucket and one by Veenstra, who was fouled in the lane. Rob Dykstra
added a free throw followed by back-to-back baskets by Veenstra and Prins to
pull within one point at 74-75.

Three lead changes later, the Knights found themselves trailing by one.
Veenstra took the ball strong under the hoop, but was called for the offensive
foul.

Marquez was fouled and hit his two free throws, but Berghuis kept it close
hitting the mark with 19 seconds to play.

A quick foul on Marquez who again went two-for-two from the line put the
Knights down by three. Prins sprinted down for a quick pull-up three-point
jumper which bounced off the rim with eight seconds remaining.

Adams sealed the victory for the Blue Jays hitting one of two from the line
with just a few ticks on the clock despite the final three from Broene.

In the championship game Saturday, host Rochester defeated Wisconsin-Eau Claire
66-52 behind a 20-point, 9-rebound effort from tournament MVP Seth Hauben.

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday night when it hosts non-conference rival
Wheaton (IL) at 7:30 p.m. at the Calvin Fieldhouse. There will be no junior
varsity game preceeding the varsity tilt. A member of the rugged CCIW
conference, Wheaton will carry a 3-0 record into Tuesday's contest.
