Calvin Sports Report (Part 2) for November 2

    VOLLEYBALL

HOLLAND- A spirited effort by Calvin lifted it to a three game victory over
rival Hope College 30-26, 30-24, 30-23. The victory at Hope's Dow Center was the
fifth win in a row over Hope and ran Calvin's win streak to 10 matches. Calvin's
last defeat came in a five-game defeat to Alma on October 9.

Trailing 14-11 in game one, Calvin used a timeout to try to break the momentum
that Hope had built up. The move paid off as the Knights went on a 11-5 run to
seal a game one victory 30-26. Calvin then used that momentum it had built and
jumped ahead of the Dutch 6-1 in the second game, using a kill from senior
middle-hitter Melissa Pell (Fremont). The Knights would be in good hands as
senior setter Laura Tucker (Holland Christian) guided the Calvin vessel through
tough times, using precise setting and timely dump kills. Tucker, playing one of
her better matches as a Knight recorded 34 assists, 11 digs, five kills and two
    service aces.

"Laura played her best defensive match of the year," said Calvin head coach
Amber Warners. "She really gave it her all-out best effort."

The Knights would not look back as they kept the lead with all-around solid
play from back row to front row. Calvin only trailed twice the entire match.

"I think the difference was the passing," Warners said. "We picked everything
up on defense and really won the war at the net."

Calvin (25-6 overall, 12-2 MIAA) was led by its dangerous middle-hitter
combination of sophomore Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian) and Pell. Pell recorded
15 kills on the match while Kuipers added 11 kills and four blocks. Senior
Cassie Christopher (Fruitport) also played a good match, amassing eight kills
and 20 digs while senior Sarah Rottman (Holland Christian) had a very balanced
    match picking up 18 digs.

With the regular season complete, the Knights now move into the conference
tournament, where they have cemented a second seed in next week's event. On
Tuesday the Knights will face seventh-seeded St. Mary's at 7 p.m. at the Calvin
Fieldhouse. The match will be broadcast via real audio at

    MEN'S SOCCER

GRAND RAPIDS– The Knights closed out their season with a hard fought battle
against the Kalamazoo Hornets. The Knights failed to score in the game, losing
1-0 to fall to 11-8-1 (6-5-1 MIAA) on the season. The Hornets were able to
extend their winning streak to 11 games and claim a share of the MIAA
championship with Hope with a season record of 13-5-1 (10-2 MIAA), marking the
third straight year Kalamazoo has claimed at least a share of the MIAA crown.
The victory also marked Kalamazoo's ninth shutout victory of the year.

The first half saw the only scoring of the match when in the 32nd minute,
Kalamazoo's Andrew Kemple booted in a rebound shot off a scrum in front of the
net with Brett Stinar drawing an assist on the play.

The second half saw several flurries of action around the net, but neither team
would score. Calvin had three strong scoring opportunities in the second half
but could not convert. With 20 minutes left in regulation, sophomore forward
Scott McPheeters (Flint Carman-Ainsworth) slid a low shot that beat thte
Kalamazoo goaltender but glanced off the post. With just under 10 minutes left
to play, senior Aaron Bouw (Unity Christian HS) was able to head a crossing pass
down at a half-open net. Bouw's header bounced hard off the ground however and
over the goalpost. With six minutes left, junior Sam DeYoung (Western Michigan
HS) cranked a one-timer from 15 yards out that just missed the near post and hit
the side of the goal. Kalamazoo was then able to burn off the final minutes of
the block with ball possession. Senior goalkeeper Justin Bouw (Unity Christian)
kept the Knights in the game as he stopped three Hornet breakaways including two
    in the first half..

Calvin dominated the shooting with an 18-12 edge and also held the corner kick
stat with a 3-1 lead. Bouw went the distance and picked up five saves in
defeat. Nick Carlin-Voigt collected seven saves in goal for Kalamazoo. The
contest was physical with Calvin committing 23 fouls and Kalamazoo 17.

Calvin sophomore Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls Christian) did not score in the
match, but was still able to win the MIAA points and goal scoring titles. He is
the first MIAA scoring champion from Calvin since 1991 when Joey Barone earned
the honor. Veldhouse finished the MIAA season with 10 goals, four assists and
24 points, finishing four points ahead of Kalamazoo's Ross Bower and Nick
    Houdek.

With the loss, Calvin finished in fourth place in the final MIAA standings, one
point ahead of fifth place Albion and two points behind third place Alma.

The Knights started quickly, scoring in the 11th minute when senior Lindy
VanHaitsma (Grand Rapids Christian) scored unassisted. Freshman Kara Zuidema
(Escondido Calvin Christian) picked up Calvin's second goal at the 27:30 mark of
the first half. She was assisted by senior Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan
    Christian) and VanHaitsma.

into a tie for fifth in assists (32).

The MIAA women's soccer season will be completed on Monday when Albion faces
Olivet in a make-up game. Albion trails Hope by one point in the overall MIAA
standings but can claim its third straight MIAA title with a victory over
Olivet. In the event of a tie, Albion would share the league title with Hope
but the Flying Dutch would receive the MIAA's automatic bid to the NCAA III
Tournament. If Albion would lose on Monday, Hope would finish as league
champion and receive the league's bid to the NCAA III Tournament.
