CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR OCTOBER 1, 2002
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
The Calvin men's and women's cross country teams continue are among the top-five
teams in the latest NCAA III Top-25 Men's and Women's Cross Country polls as the
women are ranked fourth and the men fifth. The Calvin women are ranked fourth
for the second straight week while the Calvin men are up one spot from a week
ago. Williams College of Massachusetts is the top-ranked team in the women's
poll while the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh is the top-ranked team in the
men's poll.
Both Calvin teams are coming off of impressive showings at the MIAA Jamboree
this past Saturday as the women's cross country team swept the top five spots
for a perfect score of 15 points while the men's cross country team took six of
the top seven spots to post a first place score of 19 points.
Both teams return to action on Friday when they compete at the prestigious Notre
Dame Invitational which will include a number of nationally-ranked teams. In
the women's competition, Calvin will compete in the Blue Division and will be
the only small college competing in a field of 24 teams. Among the teams in the
women's Blue Division will be nationally-ranked Division I teams from Notre Dame
(#3), Stanford (#2) and Wisconsin (#18).
The Calvin men will also compete in the Blue Division and will be one of 21
teams competing in the field. Included in the men's Blue Division will be
Division I defending national champion Stanford (currently ranked #1), the
University of Michigan (#25) and the University of Washington (#30). The field
will also include the top-two ranked teams in the lastest Division III poll in
Wisconsin-Oshkosh (#1) and North Central (#2). In addition, 14th-ranked Truman
State (Division II) and 11th-ranked Malone (NAIA) will compete in the Blue
Division.
The women's Blue Division race is set for 4:15 p.m. with the men's Blue Division
race to follow at 5:00 p.m.

MEN'S SOCCER, VOLLEYBALL MATCHES TO BE BROADCAST ON REAL AUDIO
The Calvin men's soccer match against Olivet and the Calvin women's volleyball
match against Hope will be braodcast via real audio over the Calvin web site on
Wednesday.
The men's soccer match is set to begin at 4:00 p.m. while the volleyball match
is slated to start at 6:30 p.m.. In the event of the men's soccer game going
overtime, the volleyball match will be picked up in progress.
