CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 3, 2002

    WOMEN’S SOCCER

After a heartbreaking loss in double overtime last Saturday, Calvin was able to bounce back and defeat the visiting Cornerstone Golden Eagles 1-0. The lone goal of the game was scored by Calvin freshman Kara Zuidema (Escondido, CA/Calvin Christian) who scored in the 75th minute of regulation. The play was set up by a perfect corner kick from Sarah Derrico (Cannonsburg, PA/Canon McMillan) from the right side that found Tricia Dyk’s (Western Michigan Christian) foot, who flicked the ball to the foot of Zuidema, who deposited it in the left side of the goal for her first collegiate goal.

Calvin was outshot 16-7, but had more quality scoring chances than did the visiting Golden Eagles. Senior goalkeeper Leah VanderPloeg (Unity Christian) recorded the shutout, the 15th of her career. The shutout also moves her into a tie with Lynn Bulten (1990-93) for third place for most shutouts in a career.
