    MEN'S & WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD

A pair of Calvin records were shattered at the Baldwin-Wallace Invitational
Friday night in Berea, Ohio. Both records came in the women's competition as
Calvin sophomore Carrie Zatarga of Coopersville High School eclipsed her own
school mark in the hammer throw while freshman Ashley Berner of Littleton,
Colorado, took 18 seconds off the school record in the 3,000 meter
    steeplechase.

Zatarga took second in the hammer throw with a mark of 137-7, breaking her own
school record by seven inches. It marked the fourth time she has reset the
Calvin record in the women's hammer throw.

In the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase, Berner led a strong Calvin
contingent in the event as she clocked in with a school record time of 11:28.46
that was good for seventh place. Berner's time was also an NCAA III
provisional qualifying time and it lopped more than 18 seconds off the previous
Calvin record established by senior Sara Crowe (Grosse Pointe Woods) earlier
this spring. Close behind Berner in the steeplechase was junior Tami VerMeulen
(Holland Christian) in eighth place with an NCAA III provisional qualifying time
of 11:30.97. The time was a career-best for VerMeulen by nearly 13 seconds.
Crowe also clocked a provisional qualifying time, taking 12th in 11:44.19.

In the women's 10,000 meter run, senior Erinn Boot (Kalamazoo Christian) led
a 1-2 Calvin finish as she won the race with a career-best and provisional
qualifying time for nationals of 37:24.65 while junior Rachel Baber (Brandon,
WI) had a career-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 37:26.00 in
    placing second.

In the women's 400 meter hurdles, freshman Laura Hamilton (Downers Grove, IL)
took first place with a time of 1:04.03. In the discus, sophomore Katie Corner
(Grand Rapids Catholic Central) took third with a throw of 145-6. In the shot
put, junior Mandy VanDenBosch (Grand Rapids christian) was second with a throw
of 40-4 ½ while Corner was fifth (39-9); junior Liz Frens (Grand Rapids
Christian) sixth (39-8 ½) and freshman Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids Christian)
    eighth (38-7).

Calvin also took first place in both relay events as the 4 x 100 team of
freshmen Sue Abbring (Highland, IN), Anne VenHuizen (Manhattan, MT), junior
Annie VanderLaan (Grand Rapids Christian) and senior Rachel Veltkamp (Grand
Rapids Christian) took first place with a time of 48.00 while the 4 x 400 team
of Hamilton, Abbring, sophomore Shawna Anderson (Bismarck, ND)) and senior Mindy
Worst (Grand Rapids Christia) took first in 3:56.23.

In the pole vault, Veltkamp also tied for first place with a height of 10-11 ¾.
Earlier in the week, VanderLaan also competed in the heptathlon and compiled a
    score of 4,495 points.

On the men's side, Calvin received first place performances from senior Ryan
Moore (Wexford, PA) in the discus (159-10) and sophomore Dave Haagsma (South
Christian) in the 10,000 meters (31:16.89). Both efforts were NCAA III
provisional qualifying efforts with Haagsma establishing a personal-best time by
nearly seven seconds. Senior Matt Sicilia (West Branch) also continued his
inspiring senior campaign, posting a career-best and NCAA III provisional
qualifying time of 9:18.18 that placed him in fifth place Friday night.

Other notable efforts included juniors Francis Ikwueme (Jos, Nigeria) in the
200 meters (22.65) and Jon Hutchful (Harare, Ghana) in the triple jump (45-2).

Calvin's 4 x 100 relay team of freshman Chris Friebel (Shelby, OH), junior
Steve Abbring (Highland, IN), Ikwueme and senior Keith VanGoor (Midland Park,
NJ) took first with a time of 42.38 while its 4 x 400 meter relay team of
Abbring, Freibel, freshman Reuben Sportel (South Christian) and VanGoor took
first place in a time of 3:18.15.

Earlier in the week, Calvin freshman Nate Meckes (Bay City) and senior Ben
Talsma (Western Michigan Christian) took part in the two-day decathlon
competition at Baldwin-Wallace with Meckes taking third with a total of 5,375
points and Talsma placing fifth with 5,103 points.

Calvin will now prepare for the NCAA III Track & Field Championships at
Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, next Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Both teams have several individuals on the NCAA III provisional qualifying lists
