SPORTS REPORT FOR SATURDAY, APRIL 20, 2002
BASEBALL
Calvin closed out its conference series with visiting Kalamazoo Saturday
afternoon and came away with a doubleheader sweep, defeating the Hornets 6-0 and
4-3. The sweep came on the heels of a disappointing 2-1 loss to the Hornets
Friday afternoon but also propelled the Knights above the 20-win plateau for the
second straight year as they improved to 21-7 overall. In conference play,
Calvin upped its mark to 11-1 to remain one game in the loss column behind Hope
which improved to 9-0 with a three-game weekend sweep of Adrian.
In Saturday's opener, freshman right-hander Jim Deters (Kalamazoo Christian)
was dominant, striking out 14 batters and allowing just three hits as he picked
up his seventh victory of the season against just one defeat.
Calvin gave Deters all the run support he would need with two runs in the
bottom of the first as sophomore Aaron Griffith (Manhattan, KS) drove in a run
on an RBI single and sophomore Darrell Heuker (Unity Christian) followed with a
suicide squeeze bunt that scored freshman Josh Vriesman (Denver, CO) who had
reached base on an error.
The Knights then added four insurance runs in the sixth, using a pair of hits
and a pair of Kalamazoo errors. Sophomore Terry O'Neal (Muskegon
Reeths-Puffer) came up with the key hit of the inning as he laced an
opposite-field single to left that drove in two runs and later brought in a
third on an error by the Kalamazoo left-fielder. O'Neal then stole third and
scored on a wild pitch to close out the scoring.
In the seventh, Deters struck out three Kalamazoo batters to record his sixth
complete-game and second shutout win of the year. Calvin collected seven hits
in the win with O'Neal and Vriesman picking up two hits apiece.
In game two, Calvin outhit Kalamazoo 11-5 but managed just four runs as the
Knights stranded 10 base-runners.
Calvin took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first. Griffith drove in the
first run on an RBI single with Heuker driving in run number-two on a groundout
to second base. Kalamazoo brought across a run in the fourth on one hit and a
Calvin error but the Knights answered with a run in the bottom half of the
inning as senior Ben Dykhouse (Grand Rapids Christian) delivered a two-out RBI
double that delivered Griffith from second base who had reached earlier on a
one-out single. O'Neal then put the Knights up 4-1 on an RBI single in the
fifth.
In the top of the sixth, Kalamazoo cut the gap to 4-2 on an RBI single and had
the bases-loaded with no outs when senior right-hander Matt Schmitz (Ionia) was
called in out of the bullpen. Schmitz then induced a ground ball that turned
into a double-play that erased two runners and scored one run. Schmitz then
retired the side on a strikeout to keep the Knights on top.
In the seventh, Schmitz retired the Hornets in order to gain his second save of
the year, preserving the victory for senior right-hander Andy Miedema (Unity
Christian) who improved to 5-1 on the year. Miedema struck out five batters and
walked one in five innings of work.. O'Neal, Vriesman, Griffith and Dykhouse
all picked up two hits apiece for the Knights in the win.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Division II Saginaw Valley
State at 4:00 p.m, in a non-conference tilt.

SOFTBALL
20 innings of softball resulted in a pair of hard-luck losses for Calvin
Saturday afternoon against rival Hope as the Knights suffered a pair of
extra-innings defeats to the visiting Flying Dutch. In the opener, Hope topped
Calvin 5-3 in nine innings and then outlasted the Knights 3-2 in 11 innings in
the nightcap.
The pair of victories lifted Hope (16-14 overall, 7-3 MIAA) into a tie for
second place with Albion while Calvin dropped into sole possession of fourth
place.
In the opener, Hope took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh only to see
Calvin place runners on second and third with two outs. Sophomore Keri Cole
(Mason County Eastern) then belted a booming double off the right-field wall to
score both runners and knot the score at 3. After holding the Flying Dutch in
the top of the eighth, Calvin made a serious bid for the win in the bottom half
of the inning as junior Sandy VanLeeuwen (Unity Christian) reached on a two-out
single and junior Becky Austen (Pembroke, ON) took first as she was hit by a
pitch. Sophomore Rachel Dyksterhouse (Kalamazoo Christian) came to the plate
and smashed a line-drive headed to right field. Hope senior second baseman
Milly Kreuzel came up with a key defensive play however as she got her glove on
the ball, and dropping it into shallow right field. Hope right-fielder Rose
Owens was then able to pick up the ball and fire to the plate to nab VanLeeuwen
attempting to score to quell the Calvin victory bid.
In the top of the ninth, VanderMeulen continued her heroics for the Flying
Dutch as she connected on a two-out, two-run RBI triple into the right-field
corner to put Hope up 5-3. In the bottom of the ninth, Hope starter Andrea
Adams retired the Calvin side in order to allow the Flying Dutch to pull out the
win. Freshman Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont) was tagged with the hard-luck loss for
the Knights as she struck out two and walked one while scattering nine hits.
Calvin came up with six hits in defeat with senior Lindsay Heinkel (Milwaukee,
WI) coming up with a pair of singles.
In game two, Calvin carried a 2-1 lead into the seventh after an RBI double by
VanLeeuwen in the fourth and another RBI double by Cole.
On the mound, Cole was superb as she held the Flying Dutch to a lone run
through the first six innings. In the bottom of the seventh however, Hope tied
the game on a two-out RBI single by leftfielder Megan Sheehan.
Neither team would score through the first three innings of extra play. In the
bottom of the 11th, Hope finally broke through on a two-out RBI single from Jen
Boersma.
Cole suffered the loss to fall to 6-4 on the year, despite giving up just seven
hits in 10.2 innings of work. Cole also struck out three walked one. Adams
picked up both pitching victories for Hope, hurling all nine innings in the
opener and then tossing five innings of relief in the nightcap. Calvin recorded
six hits in game two with VanLeeuwen and senior JoAnne Haven (Dorchester,
Ontario) picking up two hits apiece.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Albion for a conference
doubleheader that begins at 3:30 p.m..

One of the oldest records in the Calvin men's track and field books is no
longer. After lasting more than a decade, Thad Karnehm's 5,ooo meter record
of 14:3o.8o was shattered Friday night by Calvin senior Joel Klooster of
Chatham, Ontario, Friday night at the Eastern Michigan Twilight Invitational.
A Jenison High School graduate, Karnehm established the record in 1991 and
later went on to qualify for the U.S. Olympic marathon trials. On Friday night,
Klooster surpassed Karnehm's mark by more than five seconds as he captured the
5,ooo meter run with an NCAA III automatic qualifying and school record time of
14:25.51. Klooster led a 1-2-3-4 Calvin finish that saw four Knights post
either NCAA III automatic or provisional qualifying times. Klooster was
followed by senior teammate Dan Hoekstra (Kalamazoo Christian who took second
with an automatic qualifying time of 14:32.63 while senior Justin Pfruender
(Midland was in third with a provisional qualifying time of 14:38.37 while
freshman Brian Maat (Holland Christian was fourth with a provisional qualifying
time of 14:43.38.
In the men's 1,5oo meters, sophomore Hendrik Kok (Lynden, WA took first place
with a time of 3:53.93.
The Calvin women's distance crew also had a splendid evening as senior Erinn
Boot (Kalamazoo Christian had a career-best and strong NCAA III provisional
qualifying time of 4:4.o1 in taking seventh in the 1,5oo meters. In the 5,ooo
meters, sophomores Jessie Lair (Southfield Christian and Sarah Hastings
(Traverse City along with senior Lindsay Carrier (Tri-unity Christian all had
provisional qualifying efforts as Lair was second in 17:29.35; Hastings third in
17:48.82 and Carrier fourth in 17:53.3o.

a big night in taking third with a vault of 11-9 ¾ while senior teammate Liz
Blevins (Marion had career-best performance in taking 1oth in the discus with a
thorw of 131-5. Senior Ryan Moore (Wexford, PA also continued his ascent up the
Calvin discus charts as he surpassed the 162-foot mark in taking fourth in the
men's discus competition.
Calvin's relays also came up with strong performances with the women's
relay squads leading the way. In the 4 x 4oo meter relay, the Calvin women took
first with a season-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 3:54.65
while its 4 x 1 meter relay team had a strong provisional qualifying time of
48.68 that was good for second place. In the men's 4 x 4oo meter relay,
Calvin just missed the provisional cut in winning with a time of 3:18.12.
