Calvin Sports Report for April 18, 2002
Softball
A sweep of Kalamazoo College has enabled Calvin to move into a tie with Hope
College for the third spot in the MIAA softball race. The Knights downed the
Hornets 3-2 in the first game of the twinbill and 8-4 in the second. Calvin's
sweep sets the stage for a conference showdown with Hope on Saturday afternoon
as both teams sport a 5-3 MIAA mark.
In the first game Calvin received all its run support in the first two innings,
as the Knights scored once in the first and twice in the second. That would be
all Calvin would need, cruising to a 3-2 victory behind the strong right arm of
freshman ace Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont) who went the distance, allowing only two
runs on seven hits while walking none. Freshman Laurel Sands (Rockford) and
senior Susannah Knust (Grandville) each chipped in with two hits.
The nightcap proved to come right down to the wire as the score going into the
seventh inning was knotted at four apiece. Sophomore Keri Cole (Mason County
Eastern) started the rally on one out with a walk and advanced to second on a
Trisha Balkema (Illiana Christian) single. Each player moved up one base on a
Sands single that loaded the bases. Knust delivered a bases-loaded two RBI
single that gave Calvin the 6-4 lead. Sandy VanLueewen (Unity Christian) and Jo
Haven (Dorchester, ON) each added RBI singles that eventually led to an 8-4
victory. Heyboer picked up the win for the Knights to improve to 9-5 on the year
as they used three different pitchers to get the job done in the victory.
Calvin moves to 17-9 overall and 5-3 in the MIAA, while Kalamazoo drops to 6-14
overall and 2-6 in the MIAA. Calvin will return to action on Saturday afternoon,
entertaining the Flying Dutch of Hope College in a doubleheader scheduled to
start at 1 PM.
