REPORT FOR APRIL 15, 2002
BASEBALL
During the early portion of its MIAA campaign, Calvin has used strong pitching
performances to remain unbeaten. On Monday, Calvin's offense took over as the
Knights collected 39 hits and 27 runs to sweep a three-game conference series
from Adrian.
The three-game sweep allowed the Knights to stretch their school record win
streak to 11 games while improving to 18-6 overall. At 9-0 in the MIAA, the
Knights remain in first place and along with Hope (6-0 MIAA), are the only
unbeaten teams left in the league.
Calvin's series with Adrian originally began on Friday but the nine-inning
contest was suspended in the fifth because of rain with the Knights leading 3-0.
On Monday, the contest was picked up from its suspended point and Calvin was
able to hold for an 8-4 win. The Knights then went on to 8-5 and 11-7 victories
in a pair of seven inning contests.
In its opening 8-4 win Monday, Calvin saw a 4-0 lead vanish as the Bulldogs
scored once in the seventh and three times in the bottom of the eighth to knot
the score at four apiece. Calvin then rallied for four runs in the top of the
ninth to regain the lead. Junior Tim Voss (Tinley Park, IL) put the Knights up
5-4 with a bases-loaded single that scored one. Senior Ben Dykhouse (Grand
Rapids Christian) then scored on a wild pitch and sophomore Terry O'Neal
(Muskegon Reeths-Puffer) followed with a two-run RBI single up the middle.
In the ninth, freshman Jim Deters (Kalamazoo Christian) closed out the game with
back-to-back strikeouts with runners on base. Deters picked up the win in
relief of senior Matt Schmitz (Ionia) who had originally relieved senior Mike
Ott (Grand Rapids Union) in the eighth. Ott went seven innings and struck out
five and walked none. Dykhouse led the offense with three hits in four trips to
the plate while O'Neal also had two hits.
In game two, Deters went all seven innings to pick up the win and raise his
record to 6-1 on the year. Deters struck out six and walked none while
scattering 11 Adrian hits. Adrian cut a 6-2 Calvin lead down to one with three
runs in the fifth but the Knights added two insurance runs in the seventh behind
RBI singles from sophomore Aaron Griffith (Manhattan, KS) and Dykhouse. Calvin
finished with 15 hits in the game two win with five players collecting multi-hit
games. Sophomore Darrell Heuker (Unity Christian) led Calvin with a 3-for-4
performance at the plate.
In the rubber game of the series, Calvin outlasted Adrian behind its second
straight 15-hit attack. Senior Andy Miedema (Unity Christian) picked up the
complete-game win to raise his record to 4-1 on the year. Miedema struck out
eight batters and walked three. Freshman Josh Vriesman (Denver, CO) went
4-for-5 at the plate to raise his season batting average to .427. It marked the
13th multi-hit game of the season for the freshman shortstop. Junior Arie
Eppinga (Walnut Creek, CA) also picked up two hits in the win to raiser his
season average to .418.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to nationally-ranked
Division II opponent Grand Valley State. Tuesday's contest in Allendale will
begin at 4:00 p.m..
