    MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD

ALMA, MI * Both Calvin track and field teams rolled to MIAA dual meet
victories at Alma Saturday afternoon as both teams improved to 3-0 in MIAA dual
meet competition. In the women's competition, Calvin defeated Alma 122-31
while on the men's side, Calvin defeated the Scots 101-48.

In the women's competition, Calvin sophomore Katie Corner of Grand Rapids
Catholic Central High School punched her official ticket to the NCAA III Outdoor
Track and Field Championships as she took first place in the discus with a
school record and NCAA III automatic qualifying mark of 149-4. Corner's
record throw marked the fifth time she has reset the women's discus record at
Calvin this year. Her throw was also the third-best effort in NCAA III
women's track and field this spring. Corner was part of a 1-2 Calvin
finish in the discus as senior Liz Blevins (Marion) took second with a
personal-best throw of 127-1. In the shot put, the Calvin women went 1-2-3 with
senior Mandy VanDenBosch (Grand Rapids Christian) winning with an effort of 40-3
while freshman Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids Christian) took second (40-1) and
Corner third (38-1). Nanninga's throw in the shot put was a collegiate best
and marked the first time she had surpassed the 40-foot mark. In the javelin,
freshman Kathy Brenneman (North Muskegon) took second with a career-best effort
of 105-7 while Blevins was third at 104-10.

Another highlight for the Calvin women came in the pole vault as senior Rachel
Veltkamp (Grand Rapids Christian) took first with an NCAA III automatic
qualifying mark of 12-0 while junior teammate Anna VanDrie (Grand Rapids
Christian) was second with a strong NCAA III provisional qualifying mark of
11-6. Veltkamp's automatic qualifying effort is the third-best pole vault
performance in NCAA III track and field this spring and will also allow her to
make her fourth straight trip to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field
Championships. A year ago, she took third in the pole vault at the national
    meet.

Calvin's 4 x 400 meter relay team also clocked in with a first place and NCAA

freshman Nate Meckes (Bay City) held off a strong push from Alma's Josh
Heitsch to win with a throw of 49-11 ½. The two competitors were tied at 49-11 ½
but Meckes was determined the first place winner by virtue of his second throw
which was 49-11 while Heitsch threw the shot 48-10 ½ on his second attempt. In
