Heyboer Tosses Second Straight No-Hit Gem to Lead Knights to Doubleheader Sweep
of Olivet
Calvin College freshman Rachelle Heyboer continues to impress for the Calvin
softball team.
On Thursday, the Fremont High School graduate tossed her second consecutive
no-hitter in leading the Knights to a doubleheader sweep of visiting conference
foe Olivet. In the opener, Heyboer blanked the Comets 4-0 as she did not allow
a hit over seven innings of work while striking out seven batters without a
walk. The Comets were able to place two runners on base on a pair of Calvin
errors.
Calvin's scoring output came in two separate innings as the Knights scored
twice in the fourth and twice in the sixth. In the fourth, the Knights used two
hits and three Olivet errors to build a 2-0 lead. In the sixth, the Knights
scored two runs on one hit, one error and a pair of fielder's choice plays.
Heyboer's no-hit gem came on the heels of a 9-0 no-hit performance over
Franklin of Indiana Saturday afternoon. Heyboer's no-hitter in the opener of
Thursday's twinbill against Olivet marked the 23rd no-hitter in an MIAA
conference game and the fifth by a Calvin pitcher. Prior to Heyboer's
no-hitter, the last Calvin hurler to toss a no-hit gem in an MIAA game was
Shauna Koolhaas in an 8-0 win over Olivet in 1997.
Heyboer upped her record to 6-4 on the year with the win Thursday while
lowering her earned-run-average to 2.51. Heyboer now has 38 strikeouts against
just eight walks in 61.1 innings pitched.
In game two of Thursday's doubleheader with Olivet, Calvin rolled to an 8-1
win over the Comets as sophomore left-hander Keri Cole (Mason County Eastern HS)
tossed her fourth complete-game victory of the year as she scattered five hits
over seven innings of work while striking out six and walking none while upping
her record to 4-3 on the year.
Calvin vaulted into a 4-0 lead with three runs in the second and one in the
third. Freshman Laurel Sands (Rockford) then belted her second home-run of the
spring in the fifth inning as she sent a two-run shot deep beyond the left-field
wall to put the Knights up 6-1. Calvin then tacked on two insurance runs in the
top of the seventh to secure the win.
Sands went 2-for-4 with three RBI's in the game two win and finished the
afternoon 4-for-7 with three runs scored. Junior Sandy Van Leeuwen (Unity
Christian) also went 2-for-4 in game two.
The doubleheader sweep lifted Calvin's overall record to 12-8 and its MIAA
mark to 2-2 while extending its win streak to four games. The Knights are
scheduled to travel to Adrian on Saturday for a doubleheader slated to start at
1:00 p.m..
