BASEBALL
OLIVET, MI - Calvin's baseball team traveled to Olivet for each team's MIAA
opener. In game one, the Knight's were victorious with a score of 7-4. The
Knights were able to break a 4-4 tie in the seventh inning as senior co-captain
Ben Dykhouse hit an RBI single, starting a one out rally. Darrell Heuker then
hit a two run double on his way to hitting 4-4 in the game with three doubles
and two runs batted in. Junior Arie Eppinga hit 3-4 with two run batted in as
he helped senior pitcher and co-captain Mike Ott on his way to victory. Ott
pitched six innings with nine strike outs and was relieved by senior Matt
Schmitz, who pitched one inning in earning the save.
Game two was another Calvin win as they prevailed 3-1. In the fourth
inning, senior Mike Noorman broke a 1-1 tie by scoring on a two out RBI single.
The Knights added their insurance run in the top of the seventh inning as
Dykhouse hit an RBI single. Four Knights, including Noorman, sophomore Terry
O'Neal, and Freshmen Josh Vriesman and Tim Hansen, added to the output with
two hits. The Knights racked up ten hits in the game, while holding Olivet to
only three. Senior Andy Mediema pitched the complege game for the Knights on
his way to the victory, dropping Olivet to 8-4 on the season. He had seven
strikeouts and only gave up three hits. The Knights are now 10-6 (2-0 MIAA) as
they will face Olivet again for game three of the series on Monday night. The
game will start at 3:00 p.m. and is scheduled for nine innings.
SOFTBALL
ALMA, MI - Calvin's softball team dropped game one of their double header at
Alma College with a score of 8-0. The game did not see all seven innings as the
Knights were behind by eight after the fifth inning, reaching the mercy rule.
The Scots used their entire line-up in the first as they scored three
runs on three hits while leaving three on base. Calvin's second inning saw
one of their two hits in game one by senior Susannah Knust, who hit a double
into the outfield, but she received no help as the other three batters were sent
back to the dugout. The Scots had one run on two hits in the second as Calvin
helped them extend their lead to 4-0 with an error to let one runner score.
They left two batters in scoring position as the last two batters flew out. The
Scots again scored one run in the third on two hits making the score 5-0, while
leaving one batter on base. The Knights could only let three batters out of the
dugout in the fourth inning as the Scots' third baseman went to work, helping
in all three of the Knight's outs. The Scots extended their lead to eight in
the bottom of the fourth by scoring three runs on three hits and leaving three
runners on base. The top of the fifth would prove to be the Knight's last
chance to score in the first game, but all they could pull out was one hit by
junior Becky Austen as the other three batters were quickly put out. The
starting pitcher for the Knights was Keri Cole, who lasted three and one-third
innings, giving up nine hits and seven runs. She threw one strikeout and four
walks. Kara Van Kooten relieved her after one out in the fourth. She gave up
one hit and threw one strikeout, while letting one run score.
Game Two started differently than the first with the Scots opening the
game batting first. The Scots had runners, but sophomore left fielder Rachel
Dyksterhouse gunned the ball to home saving the Scots only potential run in the
inning after getting two hits. The Knights came out looking for revenge as
every batter got to face pitcher Melissa Tavidian, including leadoff hitter,
senior Lyndsay Heinkel, facing Tavidian twice. The Knights scored five runs in
the first on four hits as they opened the game with a 5-0 lead. The Scots were
given three errors in the first, helping the Knights along with their runs. The
second inning only included one hit for the two teams combined as Calvin
pitcher, Rachelle Heyboer, struck out the side. The Scots cut the lead to 5-2
in the third inning by scoring two runs on two hits. The floodgates opened for
the Scots in the sixth inning as they gained the lead and never looked back.
The Scots had nine hits in the inning as eleven different batters saw the plate,
one of which was a grand slam home run by junior Amanda Dohm putting the Scots
up 11-5. The sixth inning saw the Knights go a fourth straight inning with only
three batters reaching the plate. In the seventh inning, the Scots were able to
add an insurance run to make the final score 12-5, while holding the Knights to
one hit. Calvin's starting pitcher, Heyboer, pitched five and one-third
innings on her way to the loss, giving up 15 hits and 11 runs. She struck out
four batters and walked one. Kara Van Kooten came in relief for the final one
and two-thirds innings. She gave up two hits, struck out two and walked one.
The Knights next play Kalamazoo at home, Wednesday, April 3, at 3:00
p.m.
