CALVIN MEN'S BASEBALL DROPS BOTH AT MARIETTA
Marietta - Game one of the double-header against the Marietta College Pioneers
ended in an 8-5 loss for the Knights. The seven-inning game started with plenty
of action in the first inning with the Knight scoring two runs in the top and
the Pioneers gaining the lead in the bottom by scoring three making the score
3-2. The next three innings had no scoring, but in the bottom of the fifth,
Marietta scored two runs to extend their lead to 5-2. They then scored three
more in the bottom of the next inning making it 8-2. The seventh inning looked
promising for the Knights as they scored three runs, then loaded the bases with
the score 8-5, but that would be the closest they would get to pulling off the
victory as Sophomore Terry O'Neal grounded out to second base for the third
out. The winning pitcher for Marietta was their starter, Matt DeSalvo, who
pitched six and two-thirds innings giving up two hits and five runs, while
giving up ten walks and striking out nine. The losing pitcher for the Knights
was also their starter, Jim Deters, who pitched a complete game giving up nine
hits and eight runs with two walks and five strikeouts. The Knights left eleven
runners on base to only three for the pioneers.
Game two ended in another loss for the Knights as their season record fell to
seven wins and six losses. Marietta, who won 11-2 upped their record to 10
wins, two losses, and one tie. The nine-inning game started with the first
inning containing one hit for the Knights, while the Pioneers scored five runs
on a two-out rally with a three-run homer to make the score 5-0. The Pioneers
added another run in the second and two more in the fourth, increasing the lead
to 8-0. Calvin opened the fifth inning with two base runners, but had the next
two batters strike out. Senior Mark Jansen was then hit by a pitch to load the
bases, but the sixth batter of the inning, freshman Josh Vriesman, grounded out
to end the Calvin threat. Calvin then held the Pioneers hitless to hold the
score at 8-0. The Knights scored their first runs of the game in the sixth
inning on a two-run homer by senior Ben Dykhouse. The Pioneers also added to
their run total in the sixth, scoring one run on a sacrifice fly, making the
score 9-2 after six. In the seventh inning, the Knights were again held
scoreless, while the Pioneers again struck with two runs giving themselves an
11-2 lead. In the eighth inning, the Pioneers brought in pitcher Mike Mooney,
who gave up a hit on his first batter, but that would be the only hit for the
Knights that inning. The Knights couldn't produce any runs in the ninth
inning as the game ended with the score 11-2. The second game, winning pitcher
for the Pioneers was Trey Lamb, who pitched seven innings, giving up nine hits
and two runs, striking out six batters and walking one. The second game, losing
pitcher for the Calvin Knights was Senior Mike Ott, who pitched six and
two-thirds innings giving up twelve hits and eleven runs with one strikeout and
six walks. Calvin left nine runners on base to Marietta's seven.
