BASEBALL
FORT MYERS, FL - Calvin used late-inning heroics to sweep both ends of a
doubleheader with Central College of Iowa Friday evening while stretching its
win streak to five games and improving to 7-2 in the process.
Calvin opened the doubleheader with a 3-0 win behind a complete-game shutout
performance from senior righthander Andy Miedema (Unity Christian) who struck
out nine and walked one while scattering three Central hits. Calvin provided
Miedema all the run support he would need with a run in the third as senior Matt
DeHoek (Grand Rapids Christian) singled to left-center and advanced to second on
a walk to sophomore Terry O'Neal (Muskegon Reeths Puffer). DeHoek then moved up
on a flyout to center and then scored on a wild pitch.
The Knights then tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the fourth as senior
Ben Dykhouse (Grand Rapids Christian) delivered an RBI single and junior Tim
Voss (Tinley Park, IL) brought home Dykhouse two batters later with a sacrifice
fly to center field. Central then mounted a rally in the top of the seventh but
Miedema was able to get out a jam, stranding two runners in scoring position
with a pair of ground outs and a strikeout. The shutout was the first of
Miedema's collegiate career.
Calvin then put on its rally caps in game two as the Knights overcame a 5-1
deficit with five runs in the bottom of the seventh to gain a dramatic 6-5 win.
Central (3-7) took a 2-0 lead with two runs in the top of the third before
Calvin cut the lead in half with a run in the fourth. Central came back to
score twice in the fifth and added another run in the sixth to build a 5-1 lead
heading into the final frame.
In the bottom of the seventh, Calvin loaded the bases with a single by sophomore
Aaron Griffith (Manhattan, KS) and a pair of Central errors. Freshman Josh
Vriesman (Denver, CO) then reached safely on an error by the Central third
baseman, allowing Griffith to score from third base and leaving the bases full.
Senior Mark Jansen (Denver, CO) then rifled a two-run RBI double down the right
field line to score O'Neal and Dykhouse, leaving the Knights trailing just 5-4.
Sophomore Darrell Heuker (Unity Christian) completed the rally with a base hit
up the middle to score Vriesman and Jansen with the game-tying and game-winning
runs. All five of Calvin's runs in the bottom of the seventh were unearned.
Freshman Jim Deters (Kalamazoo Christian) went the first five and two-thirds
innings, striking out five and walking none while giving up nine hits and five
runs, four of which were earned. Senior James Cottier (Denver, CO) picked up
his first collegiate victory in relief as he struck out one and walked two in
one and a third innings of relief. Both teams finished with nine hits apiece
with Heuker pacing the Calvin offense with three hits in four trips to the plate
while Griffith also had a two-hit performance.
Calvin will close out its spring trip Saturday afternoon when it faces Judson
College of Illinois at 1:00 p.m..
