CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR Wednesday February 6, 2002
MEN'S BASKETBALL
In the midst of a heated battle for the MIAA title, the Calvin men's basketball
team will take a conference victory on the road any way it can.
On Wednesday night, Calvin did just that, sneaking out of the Adrian Merillat
Center with a 72-68 road win while pulling back into a first place tie with Hope
in the MIAA standings at 7-2 in league play. Kalamazoo also remained hot on the
heels of the Knights and Flying Dutchmen as the Hornets topped Albion 67-62
Wednesday night to improve to 7-3 in conference play.
Calvin's victory at Adrian was its sixth straight and allowed the
regionally-ranked Knights to improve to 17-5 overall. For the first five
minutes of Wednesday night's contest however, it appeared that Adrian might run
away with the win as the Bulldogs raced out to a 14-4 lead on the strength of a
pair of triples from junior guard Steve Brooks.
Calvin then mounted a 16-5 scoring run over the next six minutes capped off by
a jumper from sophomore Mike Natelborg (Highland, IN) that gave the Knights a
20-19 lead with 9:55 left in the first half. Adrian (12-10 overall, 4-5 MIAA)
answered with a 14-4 run to build a 33-24 advantage with five minutes remaining
in the half. The momentum then swung back to the Knights as Calvin closed out
the half with an 11-2 run capped off by a jumper by sophomore Chris Prins
(Escondido, CA) in the closing seconds that knotted the score 35-35 at
halftime.
The lead then changed hands four times in the second half before the Knights
took the lead for good on a three-pointer by Prins with 13:40 left to play that
put Calvin up 52-50. Calvin would later stretch its lead to 60-53 on a layup by
senior Jon Potvin (Gladstone) with 10 minutes remaining but the Bulldogs refused
to fold, closing to within a point at 61-60, only to see the Knights score the
next five points to build a 66-60 advantage.
Junior forward Rob Dykstra (Tri-unity Christian) then nailed a pair of free
throws with 1:58 left and added another free throw with 30 seconds left that
gave Calvin a 72-68 lead. Adrian senior Chris Howard brought the Bulldogs to
within 70-69 on a jumper seconds later. After a missed free throw by Calvin with
18 seconds left, Adrian had a chance to take the lead but misfired on a
three-point attempt with 10 seconds remaining.
Calvin junior forward Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian) grabbed the rebound
on the missed three-point attempt and fired a pass to a wide-open Prins
streaking down the court. Prins converted the pass into a layup with one second
remaining to close out the narrow Calvin win.
Prins led Calvin in the victory with 19 points while sophomore guard Kevin
Broene (Grand Rapids Christian) was next with 14 points including a four-of-six
performance from three-point territory. Dykstra and Veenstra were also in
double-figures as Dykstra collected 12 points and nine rebounds while Veenstra
had 10 points and eight boards to stretch his double-figure scoring streak to 40
games.
Adrian was led in scoring by Brooks who pumped in a game-high 25 points while
Howard collected a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Dan
Walter added 11 points for Adrian.
Calvin finished the game with a 39.7 percent field goal clip while Adrian shot
49.2 percent from the field. Adrian also shot 32 percent (8-of-25) from
three-point land while Calvin was seven-of-20 (35.0) from beyond the arc.
Calvin held a big advantage at the free throw line, converting 19-of-23 attempts
at the stripe for an 82.6 percent clip while Adrian was two of five at the
line.
Adrian also held a 34-30 rebounding advantage with the Bulldogs turning the
ball over 17 times and Calvin 10 times.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Albion at 3:00 pm in front
of a homecoming crowd at the Calvin Fieldhouse.
