CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2002
MEN'S BASKETBALL
ORCHARD LAKE - Calvin College was on the road today in non-conference action,
defeating Orchard Lake St. Mary's College 80-63. The Knights were led by
sophomore Kevin Broene, shooting 8-13 from the field and 8-9 from the charity
stripe on his way to scoring 26 points. Sophomore Chris Prins added 16 points
to the Calvin total making all six of his free throws. Senior Lamon Mathison,
who earned 19 points and played all 40 minutes in their losing effort, led St.
Mary's scorers and was followed by Mike Davis who dropped 11 points, grabbed
eight rebounds, and also played the entire duration.
The first half started with St. Mary's missing their first eight shots, but
soon turned that around on their way to shooting 43 percent in the first half,
making 12-28, while the Knights shot 39 percent, hitting on 12-31 shooting. The
Knights came out with the early burst, but St. Mary's answered instantly with
a little run of their own as the game started 9-6 in favor of Calvin. The teams
continued to trade mini-streaks throughout the first half, but Calvin's were
the larger. The Knights were unable to pull too far away in the first half
though, as they went into the locker room leading 38-28. Junior Rob Dykstra
scored seven first half points and he ended the game with seven points, ten
rebounds, and three assists. Mathison was St. Mary's scoring leader at the
half with eight points.
The second half showed junior Jeremy Veenstra grabbing his tenth rebound
leading him to his 21st double-double of his career, ending with 14 points and
11 boards. The two opponents came out raising their shooting percentages with
St. Mary's shooting 15-30 for 50 percent and Calvin shooting 14-31 making 45.2
percent. The second half was also full of scoring streaks, as the Knights would
continue to pull away, but have their lead diminish to single digits.
Eventually the Knights would be able to stretch the lead, but free throws were
the story of the game. St. Mary's hit half of their 12 attempts in the game
while the Knights traveled to the line 23 times and made 20, earning 90 percent
for the game. Senior Jon Potvin led the Knights in the assist category by
dishing out five assists in the victory.
The Knights next action will be this Wednesday as they travel to Adrian with
the game time set for 7:30 p.m.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
NOTRE DAME, IN - The Calvin College Lady Knights traveled to Indiana today for
a conference match-up with St. Mary's College. The Knights outlasted St.
Mary's on their way to a 52-51 victory. Calvin was led by sophomore Kim
Wolthuis who scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds, leading the team in
both, along with junior Emily Beard who snagged seven boards. Forward Anne
Blair, who scored 23 points and came down with six rebounds, led St. Mary's in
scoring, and forward Emily Creachbaum grabbed 12 rebounds and dished seven
assists leading St. Mary's in each of those categories.
The Knights had a poor shooting first half, only hitting on 34.4 percent of
their shots, but picked it up in the second half by shooting 48.0 percent,
averaging to 40.4 percent for the game. St. Mary's only shot 24.2 percent for
the first half and 46.7 percent in the second to make a game total of 34.9
percent from the field. The rebounding situation was as tight as the final
score with Calvin pulling down 39 rebounds and St. Mary's rebounding 40 missed
shots. Junior Tricia Dyk helped the team down the stretch with 10 points, four
rebounds, and three assists. Beard and sophomore Katie Corner each added eight
points in the Knights victory.
The Lady Knights will be back in action this Wednesday at the Calvin Fieldhouse
against Adrian with tip-off time set for 7:30 p.m.
