MEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin suffered its second league loss Wednesday evening, losing to the Albion
College Britons 65-57. Junior forward Jeremy Veenstra led the Knights with 19
points and 7 rebounds, extending his double-digit scoring streak to 34 games,
counting back to last season. Albion senior guard Brett Quayle netted a game
high 26 points on 9-15 shooting off the bench.
The first half was a very close battle as neither team was able to take a lead
bigger than three for the first fifteen minutes. With five minutes remaining
in the half, Calvin capped off an 8-0 run to put them up by five, the biggest
lead of the half for either team. Albion then went on to score the next seven
to make the score 24-22 in their favor. The rest of the half would remain as
it began with the teams trading baskets and Albion going into the locker room
leading 30-26. The Knights shot only 34.5% for the first 20 minutes while
Albion was able to drop 43.3% of their first half shots. Quayle led Albion in
scoring at the break with 14, while his senior teammate, Andrew Neidlinger,
added eight of his own. Calvin's top scorers for the first stanza were
Veenstra and sophomore Mike Natelborg with six points each.
Calvin burst out of the locker room to start the second half with a 12-3 run
over the first four minutes. The barrage was started by sophomore Chris Prins
earning four points and was finished by Veenstra who netted the last five.
This streak put the Knights up by five, 38-33, matching their biggest lead of
the game. Calvin would stay on top of or even with the Britons for the next
eight and a half minutes until the 7:10 mark when Albion took the lead 49-47.
Calvin would regain the lead with 5:22 remaining, but was only able to hold it
for 12 seconds because of a four minute scoring drought. In that four minute
span, Albion was able to increase their lead to 7 and they never looked back.
In the last two minutes, Albion hit 8-10 free throws, 5-6 by Quayle, on their
way to 84.2 percent free throw shooting for the game. The Britons also shot
22-54 from the field to make 40.7 percent shooting for the evening. The
Knights shot 3-21 from 3-point range decreasing their field goal shooting to
35.6 percent, while their free throw shooting was 80 percent. Albion's bench
was the key factor as they won the scoring battle 39-13.
The Knights next showing will be this Saturday, January 19, as they travel to
Hope College. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 at the Civic Center.
