    WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

    ALBION – Calvin’s women’s basketball (7-8, 2-3 MIAA) team traveled to Albion
College’s (11-4, 2-3 MIAA) Kresge Gymnasium Tuesday night. Junior Emily Beard
earned her sixth double-double of the year, leading the Knights with 14 points
and 12 rebounds, but it was not enough as the Britons earned a 68-57 victory.
Albion’s junior Stacey Supanich, who netted 20 points off the bench, led all
    scorers.

The first half was close, including ten lead changes, as the score was 19-18 in
favor of Albion with seven minutes remaining in the half. The Britons then
went to work, going on a 7-0 run over the next 4 minutes, increasing their lead
to eight. The two teams would continue to trade baskets until the last minute
when Albion stretched their lead to 12 and went into the locker room up ten
with a 36-26 lead. Albion’s first half scoring attack was lead by Senior
Amanda Yeager who scored 10 and was closely followed by Supanich who dropped
eight points. Sophomore Liz Sietsema, who scored nine of her career high 13
points in the first half, led the Knights after the first stanza.

After Albion increased their lead to 11 to start the first half, Calvin was
able to shut down the Briton offense for 5 minutes while scoring ten straight
points to cut the lead to one. Sophomore Kim Wolthuis and Beard combined for
eight of Calvin’s ten points in their game-tightening spurt. Albion nearly
nullified the run with a 6-0 push of their own. The Knights were able to close
the deficit down to 3 points twice near the middle of the half. That is as
close as they would get as Albion hit 5-7 free throws down the stretch on their
way to 82% free throw shooting for the game, also shooting 47% from the field.
The Knights hit 41% from the field and 77% from the charity stripe. Junior
Tricia Dyk led all players in the assist category with seven, while teammate
Beard added 4 blocks in the defeat.

Calvin College will be in action next against MIAA rival Hope College this
Saturday, January 19, at the Calvin Fieldhouse. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00
    P.M.
