CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR December 7

    MEN'S BASKETBALL

    Calvin 100, Spring Arbor 63

GRAND RAPIDS, MI, The Spring Arbor men's basketball team has made a
habit of pulling out games at the end. On Friday night, Calvin made
sure that the Cougars would not be in that position as the Knights
rolled to a 100-63 victory over the visiting Cougars in front of more
than 1,800 fans at the Calvin Fieldhouse.

A year ago, Spring Arbor snapped Calvin's school record 27-game win
streak with a 73-72 victory over the Knights on a last-second shot by
Ryan Walter (Ionia HS). Earlier this year, Spring Arbor nipped Hope
72-71 on a last-second shot by Rob Salisbury and a week later, the
Cougars defeated Saginaw Valley State 88-84 in overtime after sending
the game into overtime on a 33-foot shot by Salisbury at the regulation
    horn.

In Friday night's game, Calvin broke open a close contest with a 15-3
run midway through the first half that allowed the Knights to build a
39-25 lead and eventually a 50-35 advantage at halftime.

Calvin (6-3) then ripped off a 10-2 run in the opening three minutes of
the second half to build a comfortable 23-point lead and cruise the rest
    of the way.

"It was important to come out with a lot of energy from the outset and
we did that," said Calvin men's basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek.
"We knew that we would be either 6-3 or 5-4 after tonight and our guys
weren't too excited with the thought of falling to 5-4 right before
exams. They were very motivated tonight which I was pleased to see. It
was a good sign of mental toughness."

Calvin was led in scoring by junior forward Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo
Christian) who tallied a game-high 21 points along with seven rebounds.
Veenstra was one of five Calvin players to reach double-digits in
scoring as sophomores Kevin Broene (Grand Rapids Christian) and Rob
Holleman (Chandler, MN) had 12 points apiece with junior Rob Dykstra
(Tri-unity Christian) chipping in with 11 points and eight rebounds and
sophomore Chris Prins (Escondido, CA) adding 10 points. Calvin received
strong bench support as the Knights received 41 points from its
    reserves.

Spring Arbor (7-4) was led in scoring by Walter who pumped in 18 points
on a 6-for-8 performance from beyond the three-point arc while Salisbury
    added 12 points.

Calvin shot 46.8 percent overall and outrebounded Spring Arbor 45-28.
Spring Arbor shot 43.4 percent from the field but was outscored at the
free throw line by Calvin 19-9 as the Knights were 19-of-24 (79.2%) at
the line while the Cougars were 9-of-12 (75.0).

Calvin will now break for first semester exams and return to action
next Saturday when it travels to Division III non-conference rival
Defiance for a game that is scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm
