    WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

    Calvin rolled to an 85-26 victory over host Lake Erie College in the
    championship game of the Lake Erie College Tournament to stretch its winning
    streak to four games. Calvin (5-2) led 43-11 at halftime and continued its
    momentum in the second half.

    Sophomore guard Kim Wolthuis (South Christian) led Calvin with 17 points on
    8-of-12 shooting while senior Tara Bergsma (Calvin Christian) had 13 points and
    three steals off the bench. Senior Kendra Toonstra (Calvin Christian) was also
    in double figures in scoring with 12 points while junior center Emily Beard
    (Southfield Christian) recorded her first double-double of the season with 10
    points and 10 rebounds.

    Junior Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan Christian) was named the tournament's MVP
    and was joined on the all-tournament team from Calvin by Toonstra.

    Calvin returns to action on Wednesday night when it travels to Aquinas for a
    7:00 pm contest at the Aquinas College Fieldhouse. The contest will be the
    second meeting of the year between the two non-conference rivals as Calvin
    defeated Aquinas 67-58 in the consolation game of the Grand Rapids Press
    Tournament November 24.

    MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

    DAY ONE REPORT FOR EASTERN MICHIGAN INVITATIONAL

    Both Calvin swim teams stood in sixth place after the first day of competition
    at the Eastern Michigan Invitational as the men were sixth with 84 points in a
    nine-team field while the women were sixth with 66 points in a 10-team field.

    In the men's competition, Calvin shattered three school records and recorded
    three NCAA ' B cut qualifying performances. In the 100 freestyle, sophomore
    Brad White (Dayton, OH) took second with a school-record and NCAA III B' Cut
    qualifying time of 46.21, shattering his own school record by a half-of-a
    second. Freshman Peter Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) also shattered an individual
    Calvin record as he took eighth in the 200 butterfly with an NCAA III B' Cut
    qualifying time of 1:54.69. Boumgarden's time in the 200 butterfly surpassed
    the previous Calvin record of 1:54.74 set by Steve Ruiter in 1984.

    Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team of junior A.J. Penninga (Grand Rapids
    Christian), junior Ryan Johnson (Grand Haven), Boumgarden and White also took
    fourth with an NCAA B' cut qualifying and school record time of 3:06.47,
    shattering the previous school mark by more than a full second. Penninga also
    took sixth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.00 while Johnson was 10th in
    47.30.

    In the women's competition, Calvin had a strong showing in the 100 freestyle as
    junior Katie Nagelkirk (Holland Christian) just missed a B' cut qualifying time
    as she took sixth in 53.97. Seniors Erin Kloostra (Grand Rapids Christian) and
    Kate Conrad (Calvin Christian) also had strong performances as Kloostra was 18th
    (54.93) and Conrad 19th (55.01).

    In the 200 butterfly, junior Mara McGuin (Oak Park, IL) was 13th in 2:17.37
    while sophomore Brittney Stevens (Mankato, MN) was 13th in the 300 breaststroke
    in 2:32.81. Stevens was followed by a group of teammates as sophomore Amny
    Youngquist (Zeeland) was 16th in 2:32.81 and junior Anne Kuiper (Houghton) 16th
    in 2:33.48.

    In the 400 freestyle relay, Calvin's team of Nagelkirk, Conrad, freshman
    Courtney Bechler (Holt) and Kloostra just missed a B' cut qualifying time as it
    took eighth with a time of 3:39.55.
