WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin stretched its winning streak to three games with a come-from-behind
victory over Washington and Jefferson College of Pennsylvania Friday night in a
first round game of the Lake Erie College Tournament. Calvin will face host
Lake Erie in the championship game Saturday afternoon at 4:00 pm.
Calvin trailed 30-25 at halftime and for most of the second half until it
finally took the lead with four minutes remaining. The Knights never trailed
from that point as they pulled away for the victory.
Three players reached double figures in scoring for Calvin as the Knights
featured a balanced scoring attack in the win. Junior Tricia Dyk (Western
Michigan Christian) led Calvin (4-2) with 12 points, eight rebounds, five
assists and three steals. Seniors Tara Bergsma (Calvin Christian) and Kendra
Toonstra (Calvin Christian) added 10 points apiece off the bench. In addition,
sophomore Kim Wolthuis (South Christian) chipped in with nine points and two
steals while sophomore Katie Corner (Catholic Central) collected eight points,
seven rebounds and two assists.
Washington and Jefferson (2-4) was led by Rachel Armitage who scored a
game-high 15 points.
Calvin outrebounded the Presidents 44-33 including 17-9 on the offensive glass.
Calvin also forced Washington and Jefferson into 23 turnovers and limited the
Presidents to 36 percent field goal shooting in the second half.
