CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR October 23, 2001

    WOMEN'S SOCCER

Calvin picked up its first home victory over Kalamazoo since 1994 as the Knights
defeated the visiting Hornets 4-1 Tuesday afternoon at Calvin Field. The
victory allowed Calvin to improve to 10-3 in the MIAA to move into a tie for
second place in the conference standings with Kalamazoo. It also allowed Albion
to clinch its second straight outright MIAA title as the Britons defeated St.
Mary's 4-1 on Tuesday. Calvin is assured of at least a third place league
finish for the 13th consecutive year.

Calvin took a 3-0 halftime with the familiar one-two scoring combination of
senior Larissa Onderlinde (Kalamazoo Christian) and junior Tricia Dyk (Western
Michigan Christian) helping pave the way as Onderlinde scored two goals and
tallied one assist while Dyk had a goal and a season-high three assists.

Onderlinde put the Knights on the scoreboard with just 2:03 elapsed as she took
a headed pass from Dyk and slotted a low shot past Kalamazoo keeper Adrienne
Beller. Senior Tara Bergsma (Calvin Christian) followed with her eighth goal of
the year in the 17th minute of play as tapped a shot into a wide-open net. The
play began with another head pass from Dyk to Onderlinde with Onderlinde sliding
a pass to Bergsma rushing through the right side of the box.

Dyk then scored her team-leading 25th goal in the 27th minute, collecting a
loose ball in the right side of the Kalamazoo penalty box and firing a low hard
shot just inside the near post.

Kalamazoo avoided a shutout with a goal in the 71st minute as senior Lydia
Raburn lofted a high shot past Calvin goaltender Leah VanderPloeg (Unity
Christian) into the upper left-hand corner of the goal on a feed from Jill
    Weatherhead.

Calvin closed out the scoring in the 79th minute as Dyk served a chip-pass into
the Kalamazoo box that Onderlinde was able to head on the fly past a diving
Beller and into the net for her 20th goal of the year.

Kalamazoo (13-5 overall) outshot Calvin 22-20. VanderPloeg was superb for
Calvin in goal, collecting 13 saves. Beller had eight saves for Kalamazoo.

Onderlinde's assist Tuesday was the 30th of her career and allowed her to move
into a tie for third place on the Calvin career list for assists with Missy
    VanHeukelem.

Calvin's 14 overall victories on the year is the sixth-highest single-season win
total in Calvin women's soccer history.

Calvin will close out its season on Saturday when it travels to fourth place
Olivet in a game scheduled to begin at noon.

    WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

Calvin's road struggles continued as the Knights closed out their MIAA regular
    season campaign with a 29-31, 33-31, 31-29, 30-26 loss at Kalamazoo Tuesday
evening. The loss dropped Calvin out of a three-way tie for first place with
Alma and Hope and gives the Scots and Flying Dutch the inside track on first
place in the regular season standings along with seeding and homecourt advantage
    for next week's MIAA Tournament.

Calvin dropped to 16-10 overall and to 10-4 in the MIAA with the defeat. All
four of Calvin's conference defeats this year have come on the road. The
Knights are 9-10 overall on the road and 7-0 at home.

After claiming a hard-fought game one win, Calvin led 29-26 in game two but
could not hold on, as the Hornets regained momentum for the rest of the match.

service aces in defeat while sophomore Tricia Balkema (Highland, IN) had 18 digs
