MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
DETROIT - The nationally-ranked Calvin men's and women's cross country teams
produced a pair of impressive performances at the Michigan Intercollegiates
hosted by the University of Detroit-Mercy Friday afternoon as the third-ranked
women took first place with 42 points while a split-squad from the men's team
took third with 106 points.
The Calvin women finished 31 points ahead of Division I Western Michigan
University and 50 points ahead of Division I Central Michigan University. The
Knights placed five runners in the top-13 with just 17 seconds separating
Calvin's top-five. Calvin was led by junior Rachel Baber (Brandon, WI) who
placed fourth with a time of 19:19 while sophomore Jessie Lair (West Bloomfield)
was sixth (19:23) and sophomore Sarah Hastings (Traverse City) seventh (19:26).
Senior Erinn Boot (Kalamazoo Christian) was next for the maroon and gold,
placing 12th with a time of 19:34 with senior Lindsay Carrier (Tri-unity
Christian) taking 13th with a time of 19:36. Rounding out Calvin's top-seven
were freshman Ashley Berner (Littleton, CO) in 23rd place (19:58) and senior
Sarah Crowe (Grosse Pointe Woods) in 30th (20:15).
In the men's race, Calvin was led by senior Justin Pfruender (Midland) who took
second place individually with a time of 26:05. Chris McPhee of Detroit-Mercy
was the meet winner with a time of 25:37. Calvin's second man was senior David
Ritsema (Denver, CO) who took 21st with a time of 27:20 while sophomore Kris
Koster (Grand Rapids Christian) was 29th (27:33); sophomore Joel Reasoner
(Cambridge, Minnesota) 31st (27:37) and sophomore Matt Edwards (Grand Blanc)
32nd (27:40). Rounding out Calvin's top-seven were senior Mark Lubbers (Holland
Christian) in 34th place (27:42) and freshman Aaron Iverson (Delaware, OH) in
49th place (27:59).
Siena Heights won the men's competition with a team score of 53 points.

VOLLEYBALL
ALMA -- Calvin wasted an opportunity to move into sole possession of first place
in the MIAA standings as the Knights suffered a 26-30, 25-30, 30-20, 30-22,
15-12 defeat at Alma Friday evening. The Alma victory combined with a Kalamazoo
win over visiting Hope Friday evening tightened up the MIAA race considerably as
the Scots moved into a tie for second place in the league standings with Calvin
at 8-3 while Hope remained in first place at 8-2 in conference play.
The Alma victory was the fifth straight win for the Scots including their eighth
in their last nine outings.
Calvin was led statistically by junior Melissa Pell (Fremont) who rolled up 18
kills and a match-high eight block and two service aces. Freshman Kristin
DeGroot (Tulare, CA) added 14 kills and two aces. Senior setter Sara Ahrenholz
(Prinsburg, MN) contributed 50 assists for the Knights while sophomore Tricia
Balkema (Highland, IN) collected 22 digs.
The Knights will now break until Wednesday evening when they host the Flying
Dutch of Hope at 6:30 pm in a pivotal MIAA conference match
