    VOLLEYBALL

    Calvin remained in MIAA title contention with a 30-14, 30-17, 30-18 victory over
    St. Mary's Friday night in Notre Dame, Indiana. The victory lifted Calvin's
    overall record to 13-8 and its MIAA mark to 7-2.

    Junior Melissa Pell (Fremont) was the offensive catalyst for Calvin with 14
    kills, three service aces and two blocks while junior Cassie Christopher
    (Fruitport) amassed 10 kills, eight digs and three service aces.

    Freshman Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian) also came up with two blocks while
    senior setter Sara Ahrenholz (Prinsburg, MN) chalked up 42 assists and three
    service aces.

    Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it travels to Adrian for a 6:30 pm
    MIAA conference match.

    MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

    NOTRE DAME, IN - The nationally-ranked Calvin men's and women's cross country
    competed at the Notre Dame Invitational Friday afternoon with the women taking
    first place in the Gold Division while the men took 16th in the men's division.
    Here are the reports:

    WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY REPORT

    Calvin recorded a historic afternoon in winning the Gold Division of the Notre
    Dame Invitional, taking first place in a field of 14 teams with 34 points. It
    marked the first time that the Calvin women's cross country team has taken first
    place in any division at the Notre Dame Invitational.

    Calvin placed four individuals in the top-10 including five in the top-15.
    Calvin was led by senior Erinn Boot (Kalamazoo) who cruised her way to a sixth
    place time of 18:28. Boot was followed by junior Rachel Baber (Brandon, WI) who
    took eighth in 18:30 while senior Lindsay Carrier (Tri-unity Christian) was
    ninth (18:35) and sophomore Jessie Lair (West Bloomfield) 10th (18:37).

    Sophomore Sarah Hastings (Traverse City)was Calvin's next finisher, placing 15th
    in 18:46 while freshman Ashley Berner (Littleton, CO) was 25th (19:06) and
    senior Laura Medema (Grand Rapids Christian) 28th (19:08). Sasha Gollish of the
    University of Toronto took first place individually with a time of 17:54.

    Calvin returns to action next Friday when it competes at the Michigan
    Intercollegiates next Friday with the University of Detroit-Mercy serving as
    host.

    MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY REPORT

    Calvin took 16th in a rugged field of 18 teams in the Blue Division of the Notre
    Dame Invitational Friday afternoon. Host Notre Dame, ranked fifth in the latest
    NCAA Division I poll took first place in the Blue Division with 28 points.

    Calvin and Wisconsin-Oshkosh were the only two Division III teams competing in
    Friday's race. Third-ranked Oshkosh took ninth in Friday's race with 254
    points. Ranked fourth in the latest NCAA III poll, Calvin compiled 393 points.

    Calvin's top finisher was senior Justin Pfruender (Midland) who placed 49th with
    a time of 25:35. Senior Dan Hoekstra was 63rd in 25:45 followed by freshman
    Brian Maat (Holland Christian) in 90th with a time of 26:16. Seniors David
    Ritsema (Denver, CO) and Joel Klooster (Chatham, ON)were 108th and 109th
    respectively with times of 26:31. Sophomore Tim Avery (Rochester, NY)was 113th
    in 26:36 with sophomore David Haagsma (South Christian) rounding out Calvin's
    top seven, placing 118th with a time of 26:47.

    Luke Watson of Notre Dame took first place individually with a time of 24:06.

    Calvin returns to action next Friday when it competes at the Michigan
    Intercollegiates hosted by the University of Detroit-Mercy.
