CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MONDAY, October 1, 2001
MEN'S GOLF
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Calvin lived up to the old adage "that there's no place like
home" as it fired a course-record team score of 382 strokes in winning the fifth
MIAA outing of the year. Monday's MIAA outing was hosted by Calvin at its home
course the Watermark Country Club.
Calvin's first place team performance shattered the previous course record of
392 established by Olivet in 1998. It marked the second time in three years
that Calvin has captured first place at its home outing as the Knights had taken
first place in 1999 at Watermark with a team score of 401 strokes.
Most importantly, Calvin's team performance Monday afternoon allowed it to move
past Alma and into sole possession of second place in the MIAA standings while
shaving 12 strokes off of Hope's first place MIAA overall total.
With two league outings left to play, Calvin sits 14 strokes behind the
league-leading Flying Dutchmen and 15 strokes ahead of third place Olivet. The
sixth MIAA outing of the year will be hosted by Adrian on Saturday at the
Lenawee Country Club. Kalamazoo will host the seventh and final league outing
of the year October 9 at the Thornapple Creek Golf Club.
A pair of seniors led the way for the Knights Monday afternoon as seniors Bryan
Hoekstra of Grand Rapids Christian High School and Adam Derrickson of North
Muskegon High School tied for medalist honors along with Olivet freshman Kyle
Rank with course-record scores of 74, breaking the previous record of 76 set by
Olivet's Mark Raven in 1998. It also marked the second time this year that
Calvin has had an individual earn medalist honors as senior Jon Kalmink was the
MIAA medalist on September 22 at the Pine River Country Club with a round of
72.
Calvin received four sub-80 rounds Monday afternoon as freshman Mike Bratt
(Lynden, WA) just missed medalist honors with a sparkling round of 75 to finish
in a tie for fourth place. Kalmink (Grosse Pointe Woods) was close behind,
finishing tied for eighth with a round of 77. Junior Tony Karsten (Holland
Christian) was Calvin's fifth man on Monday with a round of 82 while sophomore
Ryan Brandsma (Hinsdale, IL) came up with a score of 87 to round out Calvin's
finishers.
The individual efforts allowed several Calvin players to move up in the MIAA
individual standings. With two outings left to play, Calvin has four players
ranked among the MIAA's top-12 as Kalmink is tied for third with an average of
77.4 strokes-per-round; Hoekstra fifth (79.4); Karsten tied for ninth (80.2) and
Brandsma 11th (80.4).
"I'm extremely pleased with our team's performance," said Calvin men's golf
coach Jim Timmer. "Our seniors were terrific this afternoon and Mike Bratt came
up with a huge performance for us as well."
"We've had different individuals step up for us all year long and today was no
different," continued Timmer. "We feel very good about making up 12 strokes
against a very good Hope team. Hope outscored the rest of the league on their
home course last week and today we had the opportunity to do the same thing.
Our challenge now is to try to duplicate this type of performance on someone
else's course."
Saturday's MIAA outing at the Lenawee Country Club is scheduled to begin at
1:00 pm.
